Some days you just get lucky.

About 20 years ago I was browsing in an antique shop in Wisconsin (and by antique shop I mean the shop was old - many of the things in it certainly weren't). I happened to see a box of uniform buttons and other assorted militaria sitting on a counter and I began sorting thru the box to see what I could find when I saw what was recognizably an AZW medal that had been converted into a brooch. I have a small collection of AZW artifacts so you can imagine my excitement at my find.

And then when I looked at the edge of the medal and saw to whom it was awarded, 1595 Pte E. Jones 2-24th Foot, I think my heart stopped. I've since had the medal professionally restored in the UK and it has a replacement ribbon and bar. Sadly I've learned that 1595 Pte E. Jones didn't fight in the battle at Rorkes Drift but rather was seconded to the unit after the battle. Nevertheless the medal is the centerpiece of my small collection.

If anyone has access to historical data regarding the good Pte Jones that they care to share it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Good find Rick! Very sought after item and good that it has wound up with someone who appreciates it for what it represents.

Impressive looking piece of history....Not sure I would have had it restored though ....I still watch "Antiques Road Show"....still an impressive find.

You may be right about the restoration, Wayne, I don't know but the medal had already been bastardized by the time I discovered it having the hanger, ribbon and bar removed to convert it to a brooch so I figured what the heck, lets do a complete restoration.

I've always said you can find anything you want in Wisconsin. Nice find.

True. Most of the information I have about the medals is about Harris, very little about Jones, being basically limited to what I stated in my initial post. With knowledge of the membership here I'm hoping I can learn more about Pte. Jones.

    Hi Rick,
    Jones E. 1595 Private
From 25 Brigade depot 21/1/1879. Posted to G company Rorke's Drift 29/1/1879 and that is from the orders book Rorke's Drift which is in the regimental archieve. He was entiltled to the South Afica Medal with clasp 1877-8-9 according to the Noble 24th.
So the restoration with only the 1879 bar is incorrect.
    cheers
    Richie
P.S. great find I can only envy you:censored:

Thanks, Richie, for taking the time to respond. Your information is much appreciated. Good to know about the incorrect clasp. I'm going to try to find a replica 1877-8-9 clasp to replace the incorrect one. Would love to know how the medal got to a small shop in rural Wisconsin but I suppose I never will. My lucky day though.
