    It's a great subject of a veteran , I have seen similar pics ...Red Tom on here has lots of things like this

    Would it make a nice bust ...yes of course be interesting and a challenge to paint as well

    And, as a bonus, a lovely guide to where to put shadows and highlights for people like me who don't know.Any ideas where the light source is coming from?

    Looking at his hands and helmet Jon I would say the light is coming from above. A good way to find the light source on colour photo's is to use photo editing software and convert the pic to black & white, the light shows up much better.
