Hello mate....there really is no hard and fast rule to applying pastels......brushes/cotton buds/fingers.....the choice is yours....a case of 'whatever works for you'
Have a go with any old figure you have to hand....don't limit yourself to given colours....just think 'dirty'
Another tip....use different grades of sandpaper when you 'grind' them....use very fine for flat effects....coarser grades to get more texture to your chosen application

If you can get one it is worth the effort....sculpting and casting were spot on
