While I am waiting...

    Folks,
I am waiting on some base work for the Stretcherbearer, and just couldn't sit around and do nothing, so I started this beaut from Michael Roberts, Ltd, this weekend...what a great piece. I have the flesh tones done, the jacket, too, but everything else is either primmed or has an acrylic base applied...

    Comments, please...

    All the best,

    Patrick

    Patrick,

I am glad that you had to wait. Now you are gonna do a masterpiece. What a nice figure. I didn't know this one. It is a great figure because i find him so nice in rest, it is not a static figure and not an action figure, but he is in action because he is resting (HUH, HUH).
I hope you do a SBS from it.
    I love it already.

Beauty tones in the face Patrick, and the hair very realistic tones too.

    I will follow your progress...

    Hi Patrick

Brilliant facial tones, I take my hat off to you, I have admired this figure for a long time now, it is such a lovely figure, with so much atmosphere. I will paint this figure someday myself, but for now I will just look and wonder at yours, I hope to see more of this one..... :)

    Patrick-

Face looks wonderful. Is it complete? Are you putting the acrylic glaze over the dried oils yet? :)

Pat, You are doing one of my favorite figures from Mike Stelzel. I think the face and hair look super! The Egyptian Campaign is one of my favorite periods. Larry Munne did this figure a few years ago and brought it to our Atlanta Show. It was fantastic as he added a lot of ruined stone to the base and really made the figure stand out from the base. It was super!!! I look forward to seeing your work in a few weeks at our Atlanta Show. Look forward as well to seeing this one completed.

    Gary and John,
Thanks so much for the kind words and encouragement...I was ver surprised the flesh turned out so nicely. When I was applying the basecoat, I was thinking to myself that it was too "suntanned." I used naples yellow light to help bring it down a 'lil bit and didn't want to overpaint it, either. I am glad that it turned out as nicely as it did.

I have always admired Mike's stuff and am really glad that I started with this one, he has such a great range. I'll definately be doing more of his stuff.

    All the best

    Marc, Alex and Dave,
Really appreciate you taking the time to give me your thoughts...they are great encouragement!

    Marc,
I'll do the best I can with a SBS, but if there is something specific you want me to elaborate on just ask, ok? ;)

    Alex,
The hair on this guy is one of my favorites...I undercoated with Vallejo brown leather, and when it was dry, I did a wash of burnt umber. Once that was dried, I went back in to deepen the hair and added a lil mars black. I'll highlight with mars orange...hoping to pull off a contrasting tone for a a deep brown, should be a lot of fun!

    Dave,
I agree, this piece has a lot of attitude and the relaxed poise really sets it off nicely...

    All the best

    Andy, Keith and Xeno,
    Thanks guys...really appreciate your thoughts...

    Andy,
I tried to pull off a suntanned look, and hope I got it sorta right. I think so, but you never know for sure until it's all dry and dull coated...

    Keith,
The basic tone is in along with the highlights...I'll go back over it later today and add the dramatic highlights and deepen the shadows, but his face is pretty much done. I haven't done the acrylic glaze yet, I want to wait till the oils are a drier, but really like that affect has; do you do that, too?

    Xeno,
Thanks my friend...Mike did a great job casting this one up, it literally fell together without a bit of filler. I'll shoot you some other pictures, ok?

    All the best

    Patrick-

Actually, no I don't go back over with acrylics. I saw that from Lou and from Joe on earlier pieces and was struck by how well that looked. I thought perhaps you had done that as well. I may give it a try. But, I don't usually have the patience to wait the weeks for full oil dry. :)

Thanks Terry...am eager to see how Larry handled the coat tails...do you have a pic of his work?

    Hope all is well

    Keith,
    I am hooked on it!
I gave it a shot on the Irish Sapper I recently finished and really was pleased with the effect. I was a lil heavy at first on the glaze on his beard, and toned that down with a wash of the oil base for the the beard. I am going to give it another try with this Dragoon. I'll take a close up of the face, and you can tell me what you think, ok?

    All the best

    Keith,
Here is a close up of the face...I have applied an acrylic glaze to the cheeks and to the upper lip...

    Your thoughts...

    All the best
