    Hi,

I have on my desk a Nuts Planet 1:10 Foot Grenadier Sapper. The kit includes an axe and musket of resin and both are badly warped. I tried dipping the parts in hot water but still couldn’t get them straight. The axe was one piece mould including gloved hand. I butchered it and replaced the shaft with a length of dowel. The musket is still bent and I tried a fixed pin through it, but alas, it is now properly battle damaged.

I’m in need of some help. How can I go about straightening these bits. Grateful for any help or guidance.

    cheers

    Peter M

Try a hair dryer. Squeeze the heated musket barrel between two wooden planks until it cools completely - this will allow it to cool more slowly, and also make it straight, like these wooden planks, because your fingers will not be able to perfectly straighten the barrel.

If this option is not suitable, then you can replace the curved part of the barrel with one modeled from wire and epoxy putty.

    Hi Peter

Possibly the water was too hot on the resin , but a hairdryer or rather in my case my wife's ! is good as advised by svt

You might like to consider fitting the musket upside down so the stock sits above the shoulder , you could then cut the damaged part level with the lower edge of bust

You could also send a message to Nuts Planet and see if they can send you new pieces

    Look forward to seeing more

    Happy benchtime

    Hi Peter,
To straighten larger pieces of straight resin like this you need to use boiling water from a kettle, just hold the tip of the part with tweezers etc and lower it vertically into the hot water for about 10 seconds, you will find it will go back into its original cast shape that way with just gravity working on it. Slowly lift it out vertically and hold vertically for about 15 seconds before cooling with cold water, this works for me every time.
    Cheers

Am with Svt - hair dryer..working slowly. Or cut it in pieces and rebuild. Don’t be afraid…worst- reach out…he’s good with replacing bad or missing bits..

    Thanks guys,

I’ll give it another go. Sculptor/Artist I am not.

With the axe, I cut of the head and base, drilled out the axe head and hand and replaced the shaft with 3mm dowel. I’m reasonably pleased with the result and thought I’d try something similar with the musket.

I thought to drill through the musket and insert a bit of rod to straighten it out. Buggered it up completely. It now has more holes in it than Snow White’s hymen.

I had tried svt’s way but after unclamping it returned to the warped version. I’ll try 1969’s way with boiling water.

    Cheers all and thank you

With hairdry;er you don’t clamp it..you use fingers and bend slowly..you will find a point where the resin softens..but still has resistance..if you do get your big boy pants on and try remaking..it’s not sculpting..it’s fabricating..it’s easy

Alternative;y..to take the references above, maybe there is a blue pill to straighten the pistol?

I reckon a bit of remodelling. Svt’s pics are very helpful. Replace the barrel with some rod and go from there.
And, grasshopper, I’m not sure if you’re trying to be helpful or just taking the piss.

You started it! But then I don’t understand Brit colloquial stuff as in Snow White etc

I don't think the Snow White reference is a particularly British turn of phrase, though. Snow White, Seven Dwarves, all alone in that cottage... ;)

    Prost!

Perhaps..but in offering actual advice, in some vein, my off the cuff was no more than male version…hence not understanding apparent affront..l don’t know “take the piss”. Anyway..no harm no foul

Will look better than the original sculpt as you have all the volumes ready to bring to life vs needing define depth.besides there is always satisfaction is looking at something and saying “I made that”. .show the finished result please..
