UEM Royal Officer English Civil War Bust - SBS

Hi guys. I just started working on UEM's Royal Officer Bust and thought i would post a SBS to keep myself motivated. This is a real nice kit, the face has a lot of character and the detail is great.

First i cleaned the bust and primed it with grey primer through an airbrush. The face was then basecoated with Valejo Medium Flesh:

The bust was allowed to dry overnight and then i began to paint the face in oils. I used a mixture of Cadmium Yellow, Venitian Red and Yellow Ochre for the basecoat. The highlights were a mix of the base + Naples Yellow and Titanium White. The Shadows were The base + Venitian Red. I still need to do some deep shadow and high highlight. The eyes need some work and i havent touched the lips or hair yet:

The bust was then place in the crock pot for an hour and high to help it dry.

Any thoughts or comments are most welcome. Im posting this here so that i can become a better painter (with your help of course :) ). Thanks guys.

Hi guys, here is the next step. I added deep shadows and high highlights. The deep shadows are a mixture of Venitian Red and Lamp Black. The high highlights are a mixture of White and Naples Yellow. Any comments or suggestions are most welcome. Thanks!

Guys, does this look ok after i added the deep shadows and high highlights? Any adjustments i should make? How about the eyes? Do they still pop too much? What can i do to fix that? Any suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated.

    David,

I like it. I think the only thing that I would do is to out line the bottom of the eye, the part that touches the eyebags. I think this will help the eye to not look to popped out. I hope this helps and good luck with the rest.

Hi Dave, beautiful painting, but I concur with my buddy Joe before me in outlining of the lower eyelids.........also if I were you, I'd increase a bit the iris........try and fill out the white area a bit more so it won't have a stark look.............

    Otherwise..........just great ;)

    Keep it up,

    Ray :)

Here is my next step. Ive adjusted some of the highlights and shadows and did some work on the eyes. Ive also begun work on the hair. The base color for the hair is Vandyke Brown mixed with Gold Ochre. Any comments or suggestions are most welcome, thanks guys!

Ive finished the shirt. Its painted using a mixture of Sepia, brown madder and gold ocher. Also finished the black on the hat. I used an airbrush and first spray painted the hat black. Then i mixed some earthstone into the black and airbrushed the highlights. I went back in with a brush and lamp black oils to deepen the shadows. Any comments or suggestions are most welcome.

Also, a question about the shirt with the lace. I know the lace is white but can the shirt be a different color? If so, would the collar be the color of the shirt or the color of the lace? Thanks!

    Dave,

I am fairly new here so this is the first I have seen of your work and I must say it's beautiful!

It looks like he is wearing a buffcoat under the gorget; under the buffcoat he'd be wearing a coat that , more than likely, would be in a Regimental colour.
    Some colors to choose from:

Deep Red - Lord Hopton's Rgt.

Dark Blue (rich in colour) - Gerard's Rgt.

    Golden Yellow - Gamul's Rgt.

Green - Greencoats (sort of a 'green bean' colour as I recall)

    Medium Blue - French Mercenary

Really, you'd see just about every primary and secondary colour used (except brown). So you're not too terribly limited. ;) Choose a regimental color and paint away - keeping the lace white of course and since he appears to be a bit more Royalist in appearance, give him a crimson sash!

    Hopw this helps!

    Justin :)

    Hi David,

I think you did a great job so far! ;)

Concerning your question about the colour of the lace: it happens that Flanders, the region where I live, was (and still is) famous for its lace production. The so called "Dutch lace" (translation: "Hollandse kant") was developed around 1650 in the regions Flanders and Brabant. Trading of this lace proceeded in big quantities through the town of Antwerp, which is still one of the bigger sea ports in the world. As you could have guessed it was a real luxurious product.
Although I'm no specialist, in my knowlegde lace was always white, or in an off white colour (a real cremy colour).

So, for your bust you can go two ways. You can choose for a lesser contrast and paint the lace in an off white colour which will blend in beautiful with the brown vest, or you can decide to paint it in plain white which will give more contrast.

I hope this is a bit of help.
    Kind regards

    Johan
