A tutorial spelling out how Chuck Smith paints a flat tin figure has been posted here: http://www.flattinfigures.com/tutorial-by-chuck-smith
For those of you who have seen Chuck's work, enough has been said. For those of you who would like to try your hand at painting flat tin figures, this would be a good place to begin.
    Best wishes,

Great tutorial - love the use of grey scale to assist depth (yet to try this technique).

    Many thanks for sharing Steve

Very interesting tutorial. Not a flat painter but things like this make you want to try.
Was amazed at how the figure just jumps out at you even after the first coat after the priming is done.
    Very very good.

This is a very helpful and inspirational guide. Has it been done with oil or acrylic paint?
    Thanks

Chuck paints in oils. The gray scale is in oil. The figure is allowed to set for a few days and then he adds the color, layer after layer, in oils. You simply must see his work for ourself. Photos do not do justice. I have a gallery of some of Chuck's work here: http://www.flattinfigures.com/chuck-smith-gallery

Thank you again - I will have to give it a go! The gallery is quite something.
