I've got you two short sequences from the movie:

The first sequence takes place at the beginning - we get acquainted with the Cossack Staniza Vyoshenskaya, who lies directly on the bank of the wide and calm flowing Don, we get to know the main character Grigori Panteleevich Melechow, his family (especially the father Pantelej Prokovievich, his younger brother Petro Panteleyevich, as well as mother and sister.

In the second part of the sequence Grigorj and Aksinja Astachowa slowly approach each other ...
And we see quite rightly that the blue pants with the red stripes and the peaked caps were almost always worn, whether in military service or field work. They were on the one hand uniform, on the other hand costume.

And Grigorij rides a Don horse - that too is shown correctly. The Don Cossacks ran their own horse breeding. These Don horses were bred for frugality, endurance, toughness and efficiency - and almost all were (and are!) Foxes ...:




The second sequence, which I picked out, plays in the late summer of 1914 after the outbreak of the war. Grigorj (at the time still " Prikashnij" / Corporal), is together with his Doncossack Regiment in (then counting the Austro -Hungarian Empire) Galicia and must in an attack on a village against a KuK Infantry unit.



During this attack, he kills his first two "enemies", one with the lance, the second with the saber. We see quite rightly that not all Cossacks were armed with lances, but only those of the first sotnia, ie those who rode in the attack.




For the mass scenes, the director of the film was able to fall back on soldiers of the Red Army ...
