Excellent. The mountain man reminds me of the dearly missed Guy Herrick, a stalwart of this forum and great guy.

Ah OK, they are really nice, noticeable change in style from your first thread to these. Are you still playing with them?
I have been messing around with a set of 30mm I bought 20+ years ago to try and learn to use oil paints, but never did.
I think they are wonderful things.

I love the quality of your painting, I have never tried flats, but they are an inspiration.

Back when I dropped out of this hobby 20 odd years ago I had just purchased a set of flats from Western Miniatures, intending to learn to paint them in oils, just like the ones I fell in love with on the show circuit. Needless to say I failed, abysmally. They went into my "....one day I will...." box.

Then a few weeks ago I decided to try them again, this time, recognising my limitations, I stuck to acrylics. A 7 figure set in 30mm, I bought 2 duplicates to turn around, based on the David painting "The Intervention of the Sabine Women". Although the set was called "The Rape of the Sabine Women" which is a different work of art completely (several different ones actually).

Painted in acrylics with my attempts at NMM and cast shadow effects. First image is as my phone camera auto function gave it, second is with the auto +HDR filter. I kind of like the brighter one although it gives a slightly false impression of the shading and highlighting. I am wondering if that level of contrast suits flats?

Rob, nicely done, don't know if I could have painted flats in anything but oils. I remember this set from dear old Dick Jenkins and I think you have done a very good job. Personally I think that high contrast and colour saturation are the right way to go with flats especially the 30mm ones. Keep it up but beware flats are addictive,I was an addict for over ten years.

Thanks Simon, yes Dick was a real Gentleman, when I bought these he gave me a handful of other figures to "practice" on, some miscast others fine but incomplete set.
Any idea what happened to the Western Minis editions?

If you have any of yours still around it would be great to see some pictures. They are few and far between on this site sadly. And yes, becoming an addict would be very easy. Putting little scenes together like this one is a wonderful aspect of the hobby.

    Hi Rob

Just great to see FLATS , (I have a couple ...still unprimed )

Like the painting of the piece , personally I prefer with the filter as in 2nd image , high contrast works well

I hope we see MORE FLATS from both you and Simon

Dick Jenkins used to trade at Bugle Call , the BFFS are always there

Rob, I have dug out some of my flats, the majority are in the loft and I'm in no fit state to get up there these days, have to send one of my boys up.

Anyway, they are photographed and ready to go, I'll pop them on here if you want or open a separate thread, let me know which is your preference.

    Cheers Simon
