The Dragon has been a animal of legend , a fantasy to some a master to others , served by willing and wise subjects , both young and old.

Before this he had been a learned scholar studying in the old rectory of the order , history , politics and physical power in wrestling and agility when fencing but he also studied with diligence the art of magic.

For more years than he wanted to remember , knowing no other life or way of living except by serving his master the Dragon , this resulted in much travel and even more warfare , the like of what he could not imagine possible.

Wars came and went but always returned , this time it was not a land conquest or even a trade route expedition this was a war to defend everything that life meant to him , his land , his home , and his people .

There was another side to him he had known love along time ago , the joys of the children playing around his beloved homestead but war has reared its ugly head and now is the time to fight for everything he believes in ...

This is the subject of the latest from MJ miniatures working with Tiny Leads , a wise old man belonging to the ancient order of the dragon

MJ Miniatures has a wonderful reputation and he is is of course a top class painter and works with only the best sculptors and this is in everything he produces , amongst them of course the team from Tiny Leads.

This release is in the 1/9 scale range and is a complete departure to the previous military subjects and that is great to see , adding another dimension to the products and the company.

Lets see what we are looking at in the Review:

As usual the box quality is very high spec with a colour picture of the subject on the top and a story from the sculptor on the back setting the scene in your mind before you open the box , the resin was held in a clear bag which was then in another but this time bubblewrap ....protecting the contents really well .

The contents consist of just 2 parts the actual bust complete and the base.

Lets think about the Prep needed ... well this is not going to take long ...a casting plug from the underside and a bit of a sanding on the back for a minute casting line cut off the end on the base and that's it .....all surfaces are really smooth , and a please to run my fingers over.

Lets look at the main piece the Actual bust, this is a one piece casting the initial feel is of a wise old man , determined in pose ( he has a slight LOTR and Harry Potter look) .

Long flowing hair and beard the hairstyle swept back at the forehead , thick in form, the beard making its way like a river onto the armour , the details that Antonio has done are very nice with the way the ends of the hair sit on the shoulders and the beard being very good in presentation.

His torso is covered by a lamellar style armour plates , this is fantasy so any colour or effect is fine ...great options here, the undercuts on each plate are extremely sharp and well defined .

Across his shoulders we see various straps , as always these are very well done






The facial features are of a man who has seen much in life the ravages of time are showing , bags under the eyes , furrowed brow , eyes are wonderful eyebrows slightly raised , the mouth sits nicely out from the beard , excellent work all over the face ....this is what can make or break a bust in particular ...this makes its .

Around his neck we have the symbol of the Dragon , the horned beast , this is a little masterpiece in itself , great work on the skin on the top of the head and lots of very definable teeth with the tongue hanging out over the lips ..brilliant.
Underneath the Dragon we have a circular pendant with animal designs sculpted on it ...another nice addition.

The Base , this is a simple pedastal type very little clean up as I said and perfectly suitable for its purpose.

Final Thoughts

This is without doubt a great decision to include fantasy pieces in the MJ range , and a new sculptor as well , producing a bust in the true classic style which is good to see as well.
Presentation, sculpting are of the usual very high standards demanded from MJ , giving the modeller a top class product , this is a great painters piece and many variations are open ( look at the box art from MJ who has given him a damaged eye) .
