The Grey Army

What is the chances of a figure ever being liberated once it has been in stasis for six months or so;
not good I think as newer stuff gets purchased .
I have figures that has been imprisoned for thirty years and the key thrown away.

I have bought stuff from other grey armies and the poor chaps are now locked up in mine waiting to be moved on again

I reckon the chance is pretty slim to be honest , I "try" to rotate my GA every now and then and am amazed at what turns up sometimes ....

I suppose we could always do the oldest first but if any one is like me that's unlikely ..no willpower !

I think if we were all to only paint whats in the dark cupboards then all the manufacturers would go out of business in six months and you would not need to buy anything for at least two years apart from paint

Had a look in the cupboard and found "one or two" full figures!!


I suppose we could always nobble Carl Reid !!...but he so cuddly so maybe not !

I reckon I would need three years to do my grey army. And there's people who can easily outdo me as well...

Ron, I don't think the value of a figure can be determined by it's age only, surely it does have the most obvious affect on value but the quality of the piece also means a figure can even increase in value........wish I had those ones.
As we know some "classic" pieces and long term oop pieces can remain well sought after for many years...........but those pieces are rare and when we do get hold of them we hang on to them anyway.

And I can almost hear my grey army figures shaking their loose heads as I shove another couple of boxes on the groaning shelves.

I was not about value Mark , its about the need to paint what you have; and I know in my cave if it is not at least cleaned and glued within a week or two it is doomed

I've not got a big grey army,but i have quite a few figures part painted,which i get rid of, as i'm a firm believer of out of sight, out of mind, especially when i know i'll probably never finish the figure.
I reckon i'll only finish about a 1/3rd of the figures i'll buy ,but at least ill start all of them.Bit of a weird bugger,but i've always been like that.

I see what you mean now Ron,....I'm trying hard myself at the moment to ignore some latest releases and go back and have a look at what's on the shelf....sometimes with pleasant surprises.

I have about 20 figures in my GA, most I have not had long, and I am always on the lookout for cheap kits.
At the rate I paint them,I have about a six month supply.
Any cheap kit offers will be considered.Free would be nice

I have a grey army of 1 and although there a lot of very nice and well detailed kits coming out only a small percentage appeal to me so I don't see myself having an issue with running out of space to store them.

I purchase new releases every month and get very excited about most of them. Very rarely do many of them get painted within the first six months but I do pick pieces out of the collection to paint from several years back and find it quite pleasurable to work on something that is not current in todays releases. Still like to collect the pieces even though I may never paint them but its nice to have the choice and to be able to open some of the boxes occasionally an look at the wonderful sculptures.

I do sell a few off occasionally if I find that I have more than one or have already painted the same piece several times for one of my collectors.

Photos below of a small part of the grey arm, still many more boxes in storage in the loft of older and rarer pieces. Just need to live another ten lifetimes over to able to get round to painting it all.

Ron I thinned out my grey army by two important points, 1 do I really have the skill to paint it and 2 am I still interested in this period , so what I'm left with is stuff I want to paint and until I've painted a goodly amount of them . Some are over ten years old but I bought them because I like them at the time so why would I not like them now . I will not add any new figures or bust to my collection no matter how tempting a new releases is , I've bookmarked a few that at a later date I would like to have but if they are no longer there when I'm ready then I'm sure there will be something new cropped up by then . Regarding Tommie , some retail therapy is definitely on the cards unless he has discovered the secret to ever lasting life . I was never a mass buyer so the manufactures of figures will not suffer from my refusal to buy more figure until I have what I consider reduced my little own grey army . But look on the bright side Ron no matter how old the kit they all need a base .
PS had an argument with my sister inlaw last night about who had done the best version of Schools Out For Ever, she insisted that Alice Cooper could not be bettered , Horrors of Horrors she had never heard of Alex Harvey (my sister inlaw is German so I softened her up with Alex,s version of Tomorrow Belongs To Me ) Then played Alex Harvey's version of Schools Out , I WON

Just wish I had your will power to resist chippy I would be a richer man. Gets addictive but I guess it keeps the figure manufactures in business for a bit longer.
