I've got to think hard about the osl, not attempted it before, and this isn't a model I want to mess up as I can't replace it.
Looking at the position of the candle, it would require quite a lot of detail to be added.

Malc, it would require a lot of creative painting or just a gentle glow on the parts nearest the flame would let you get away with just a few tints to the highlights. It's a lovely figure though and I understand your trepidation, do what you're comfortable with.

Yes, a genuine top down lighting and that is a pretty big candle so lots of light leading to very stark shadows.
Would be a brave thing to try, but as you say probably not wise on a rare figure like this one.

A friend has suggested that it would be best to finish it first before attempting or considering osl, as the other colours will effect how it looks.
That sounds like a sensible approach, so I'll press on and see how it goes.

Makes sense doing that Malc, carry as you are and it'll be a beautiful figure.

    Hi Malc

OSL is a great idea but certainly not the easiest to do on this figure as others have said

A rare figure , think I would be wary ...but whatever you decide it's going to look great

Enjoy being a climbing frame and slide

Look forward to seeing more on this

I think I'm going to play safe and leave the osl off on this piece, however I know there is a smaller version of the gnome, which I would gladly try the
osl effect. Sadly I don't know who produces it or the correct name for the gnome.

He is "The Keykeeper" from Blacksmith, same company who do Rick's wonderful "Peat Bog Trio".

Well that all worked out well, do the current bust as you are and then try the OSL on a more commercially available piece.

Ordrered the 54mm version, that should fun to paint too. Definitely going to try the osl.
Blacksmith do quite a nice range, I can see where Rick gets his inspiration from. :)

I must apologise for the lack of updates, unfortunately I've not had a lot of time to paint, and I must also point out that the description of the model
is incorrect, he is in fact a Goblin and not a gnome. Goodness knows where I got that idea from. :wacky:
The shirt has been painted with acrylics and given a glaze of Van Djyck Brown.
As for the waistcoat, I wasn't happy with the way it looked, this is a very large model standing at 13cm not including the candle.
No matter what I tried, it looked a mess, so I opted for oils, and worked out a lot better.
The next step will be to detail the rope, paint the patches.

I think the photos are better than the previous ones, as my new Redgrass R9 lamp arrived.

He is a really striking figure and your paint job is bring a whole lot of life to him, love that face and the leather waist coat is great, oils are far better for this kind of material.

    Hi Malc

What on earth is happening ...imagine not knowing the difference between a Gnome and a Goblin.....LOL ( Changed title for you )

And ...the R9 has arrived ...one happy Malc I think

This is a special piece and your painting really sings .....the flesh looks even better with the new lighting

The R9 is impressive, it arrived a lot sooner than I expected.
Thank you for bringing the lamp to my attention, the one I had really wasn't suitable.

This morning I've concentrated on detailing the rope. I used a base coat of dark brown acrylics and then detailed in oils
with a blend of Titanium White and Van Dijck Brown.
I've also blocked out the patches and buttons ready for detailing at later stage.

    Hi Malc

Thought I missed a update .....like the rope works against the leather , nice patches so far

Are you doing anything else with the buttons ?

    Looking forward to seeing more

    Have FUN @ the bench
