The First Western Shoot Out in History!

Discussion in '"Today in History", Literature & Media Review' started by Martin Antonenko, Jul 20, 2020.

  1. Martin Antonenko A Fixture

    Country:
    Germany
On July 21, 1865, the first guaranteed revolver duel ("Shoot Out") in American history took place in the small town of Springfield (Missouri)!

    Davis "Little Dave" Tutt ...

...and James Butler "Wild Bill" Hickok...

... had previously had a quarrel at a poker game in the local saloon ...:

Both men were known to have loose guns, Tutt had already killed one man, Hickok several, but never in a duel.

As the quarrel escalates, Hickok gets up and walks out onto the street. From there he calls Tutt, who also comes promptly.

At some distance from each other, the two "Gunslingers" build up (Tutt can be seen in the back in a light coat!), pull their weapons and fire almost simultaneously!

Tutt's bullet goes wrong, but Hickok's shot fatally hits the opponent in the chest ...:

Newspapers report on the first shoot out - and Hickok becomes a celebrity almost overnight!

At the place where Dave Tutt was shot during this duel, a commemorative plaque is embedded in the pavement today ...:

At another poker game, on August 2nd, 1876, in Deadwood saloon, South Dakota, Hickok will be less lucky and shot from behind!

His last hand, with which he died in hand - aces and eighths - has since been called "Dead Man's Hand" among poker players ...

The fifth card is usually shown face down because Hickok was killed when he just swapped it.
However, it is said to have been the diamond jack ...

    And before I forget:

Greetings to Belgium for the national holiday!
Groeten naar België voor de nationale feestdag!
Salutations à la Belgique pour la fête nationale!
