The 120mm scene depicts a Scot’s Grey duelling with a fallen Cuirassier from Farine's brigade, after the initial charge of the Greys at Waterloo.

The Grey and the Cuirassier have been engaged in combat, the Cuirassier has fallen so they now engage with pistols.

An account (big thanks to Nigel Ashley for this detail) from a Colonel in the French lancers that attacked the Greys at Waterloo (the dragoons in his account are from the Union Brigade):

"In the tangle of horses and men, he cut down three dragoons with his sabre, two more managed to escape him. Cries from behind alerted him to the fact that his adjutant-Major was in danger, and he turned to help, he let his sword drop from its knot and drawing his pistol he fired."

Thank you Nigel, really appreciate your input around the historical context for the work. Having been given a load of bits by Gordon, the concept of a cavalry duel seemed novel to me, and quite original in concept. Heavy cavalry were dependent on the sword or Lance at that time as you know. In the age of fire arms and the end of the Napoleonic wars at Waterloo, I see this piece as the dawning of a new era in warfare.
