    Hi Jay,

Indeed facial lighting contrast is an intensely personal decision. I think that's what makes figure painting so much fun in the first place, checking out how different artists render a same face sculpt!

I would love to learn the way you paint the white cloth and the glove. If there is one style I want to settle with, this is very close to it :)

    Cheers

    Giorgio, thank you!

    Michael, well said.

As for my cloth, here it is in speed reading format, LOL. I basically use titanium white and raw umber. I mixed white with varying small amounts of raw umber for about 4 shades from nearly white, to a deeper/dirtier white for the shadows, and shaded as per usual from darkest shadows to highlights. Some pure white was used in very sparing amounts on some of the highest highlights. Mostly on the shoulders.

For the leather colors, I used raw umber, cad red medium, a touch of yellow ochre, and raw sienna (mid tone was largely raw sienna). Each of the three tones I mixed had a touch (just a smidge) of white to help with the opacity because raw sienna, at least my raw sienna, tends to be VERY transparent. I would be lying if I didn't admit, that I actually painted the leather in 3 coats. After about 24 hours drying time on each I ended up "punching-up" my highlights and deepening my shadows several times until I was satisfied with the final result. I hope this helps in some small way!
