Strong colored directional light (stage spotlight effect)

I'm considering a bust of a performer on stage with a purple or blue colored spotlight effect from one side. Can someone point me to a tutorial on achieving this? I've seen a lot of fantasy figures with heavy blue shadows and bright yellow red highlights, but I'm looking for natural colors in the shadows and tinted highlights. The clothing would be brightly colored and the skin a midrange African American.
