A very good evening to all my fellow Planeteer's...

May I present for your critique the excellent Stormtrooper Miniatures Border Reiver bust - this kit is just simply : stunning.

I think I still need a couple of ' tweeks ' on it - but I will sit and look at it for a couple of weeks before I re-engage ( with possible pointers from yourselves too please ).

100% Acrylic - metals were a mixture of Andrea ( metal paint set ) and 2 darker metal shades from Games Work shop. These were ' dabbed ' on with a sponge over black primer that had itself been speckled with rusty / brown / blues / orange shades. The darker metals were applied more deeply to the lower part of the breast plate. I also used a 4B pencil to give the helmet a slightly different shading.

The benefit of using a sponge here was twofold - 1. it allowed a slow build up of semi-opaque colour to let the underlying tones through and 2. it gave a physical texture that took some lighter washes / tints easily.

I still : fudge / struggle / get the right hump when painting faces......... dont know what it is - some one tell me the sercret receipe please !!!

I am using a retarder more and more with acrlic paint too by the way - can't recommend it enough.

The chances are that I will probably purchase another and have a go at it again in a year or two - this one has already been asked for but is was sooooo mush fun!!!!!

Have a great weekend all.

Thanks - Dan.

Dan - damn fine mate!
Do like what you've done so far & face captures a line, weary guy.
Recommend consider adding a bit of gunge to the metal. All looks pretty clean from photos you have.
Maybe the shots but I'd suggest looking at toning down metals with some Choc Brown or Umber tones metals especially in shadow areas.

Also gloves & cloak look very close in colour, perhaps give one or other some washes to indicate different materials.

Thanks for sharing tips on sponges for metals will look at trying this myself.

Would love to do this bust but haven't picked one up yet. This has encouraged me to give it a go.

What retarder are you using?

Mike

Very nicely done Dan. I'm very near completing this one myself, the latch crossbow has been puzzling me a bit though. I can't find a decent reference re firing mechanism, I like your solution but is the bowstring not on the wrong side of the bow? The underside seems too curved to take a bolt. I hope your right because getting a decent firing mech really enhances the figure.
Cheers
Derek
