Forward. Only my second review for Stormtrooper Miniatures, the first being a bust, this is my first full figure and boy oh boy what a beauty it promises to be.
First Impressions. The usual Stormtrooper Miniatures packaging and boxing is once more employed here with excellent results. The heavy duty cardboard box does a perfect job of protecting the figure enclosed within while the lift off lid displays the colour artwork of the completed piece as depicted by Ernesto Reyes.
Inside the box and the individual pieces are further well protected being placed securely inside clear plastic zip lock bags which in turn are wrapped in a bubble wrap bag. Underneath all of the packaging you will find two sheets of reference material on A4 size folded paper. All of the contents arrived in first class condition with no damage or missing parts.
The Figure. The figure represents an Iroquois Indian from the French Indian War of 1754- 1763. Requiring assembly and painting it consists of X9 individual pieces of resin cast in a light grey colour.
The quality of the resin is excellent and a joy to work being neither too soft or brittle, very little will be required in the way of preparation with only the absolute minimum of flash and seams present and casting lugs kept suitably small.
The casting is sublime with no defects or deformities found, test fitting of key parts proved very positive with an accurate fit. Lets take a closer look at the individual pieces………
Main Body. (photo below) Carl has created a very simple yet incredibly powerful pose with this sculpt that very ably portrays a story. In my book that sets the foundations and shows the hallmark of a quality figure from an accomplished sculptor. The figure wears a mixture of 18th century British Officers uniform (tunic) and the more traditional Iroquois Indian breechcloth and deer hide leggings.
(photo below) viewed from any angle the figure looks majestic. Here we see the powder horn and bag slung over the right hip both of which carry lots of well defined detail. The turned back tails of the tunic are excellent, beautifully undercut with the ‘hang’ of the coat looking sensational. The flared overlap on the deer hide leggings worn over the bare flesh of the legs adds great movement along with creases and folds. The leather shoes also have plenty of detail to get to grips with.
(photo below) The facial expression completely brings the figure alive and adds superb character. Beautifully proportioned in every aspect its the frown and deep in thought appearance that works so well here. One of the most beautifully expressive faces I have seen on a figure in a long time, Carl deserves high praise indeed for his expertise in achieving such a convincing sculpt.
(photo below) seen from the front the quality of sublime detail continues. The tunic buttons and braid is awesome while the open turned back sides of the tunic reveal the bare flesh of the stomach and upper thighs. The breechcloth is well pronounced showing excellent movement in the material, the groove perfectly accommodates the part of the musket that lays across the front of the body. Straps sit naturally against the body and clothing with the decorative scarf adding an interesting feature. Also seen here is the head of the Tomahawk Axe moulded in place over the left hip.
Left Arm. (photo below) the tunic material covering the arm shows lots of creases and folds all of which look authentic and convincing. Using the shadows and highlights in the painting stage will really accentuate these features further. The turned cuff and raised braiding detail on the lower sleeve adds even more realism showing lovely attention to detail.
Right Arm. (photo below) more of the same qualities seen above are present here.
Bed Roll. (photo below) the bed roll hangs via straps across the lower back and left hip. Suitably taut creases are visible where the straps are pulled tight giving texture and depth to the materials appearance. Crevices at either end as the bed is rolled also look authentic. A nicely convincing addition.
Musket. (photo below) the figure carries two weapons, the Tomahawk and this beautifully sculpted, beautifully cast musket. Very much one of the many outstanding highlights of the kit, totally authentic and in keeping with this time period it will look sensational painted.
(photo below) the hands have been sculpted gripping the musket. The detail that has been carved into those hands is simply superb, every joint perfectly reproduced giving a totally convincing grip.
(photo below) there is so much superb sculpting to appreciate in the musket , the stock has some fine engraved, raised detail adding a real touch of quality while the firing mechanism looks suitably intricate and convincing. Again the detail in the hand seen here is just beautiful.
Decorative Head Piece’s, Tomahawk Axe Handle, and Metal Pin. (photo below) here we have the traditional long handle associated with the Tomahawk Axe, simply a case of tidying this up before attaching to the axe head moulded in situ over the figures right hip. We also have the two headpiece parts, beautifully sculpted and because of this rather delicate, use care in the clean up process and all will be good. Lastly we have a length of metal tube included for securing the decorative branch to a display base.
Display Base. (photo below) I absolutely love this display base that has been included. Representing a substantial dead and fallen tree branch the twisting, gnarly appearance works extremely well offering something far more interesting than a simple plinth for the figure to stand upon. As can be seen in the photos below, with some imagination and a few added touches of your own this can form the basis of a very impressive display, a great inclusion from the company and one I was glad to see.
Reference Material. (photo below) another fine addition to the kit is this reference material. Presented on two sheets of A4 size paper it holds information on the suggested painting guide along with full colour reference photos of the completed figure portrayed so wonderfully at the hands of Ernesto Reyes.
Photos. I have included a selection of photos below for reference purposes. All are from the Stormtrooper Miniatures Website and Facebook pages showing the fully assembled figure painted and unpainted.
Synopsis. When I first saw this figure on the Stormtrooper Miniatures website I instantly fell in love with it, when I actually saw it in front of me I was quite simply blown away with what I saw.
Make no mistake, Carl Reid has sculpted a truly magnificent piece here with the exquisite casting more than capable of holding all of that glorious detail extremely well. Assembled and painted this will make for an exceptional display piece as can be seen from the truly wonderful example above courtesy of Ernesto Reyes.
Stuart has gathered together a magnificent team of artists, combined they portray some incredibly pleasing and talented work that can only be described as inspirational. Easily one of my personal favourite figures reviewed this year, I would have no hesitation in recommending its purchase, another absolute masterpiece from the awesome Stormtrooper Miniatures and a privilege for me to have reviewed such a wonderful release.
