  1. Ferris A Fixture

This one has been lying around for about 10 years now (!!!!) and I wanted to get it done. So here's the start.

It's Verlinden 1:16 and it's quite a good sculpt, except for the neck which is too straight.

Vallejo acrylics over Humbrol base, face in oils (done 10 years ago).

Next step is the camo on the jacket and cap.

Sorry about the crappy work bench shots....

Any comment, tips or advice is welcomed.

    Cheers,
    Adrian

Looking fabulous already. Saw a rendition of this some time ago. That was a great job too. This kit brings out the best from a painter.

I agree the neck is odd. Too bad you are at this stage already. Maybe could have done something about it, shape and length-wise.

Looking great so far!!!! I like the subtle flesh tones.

BTW, the figure looks very well sculpted.
Does anyone know who sculpted this one?

    Nice

It's one of Verlinden productions better figures.
The shading and flesh looks great so far.

Great start... Taesung, I think several figures in this Verlinden line were sculpted by Julian Hullis. I'm not sure if this one is his work as well, though... Verlinden never liked giving credit to his sculptors.

Hey guys, thanks for your comments!

@Carl: It really is quite a big fella indeed. It may actually be a bit bigger than 1:16. Although I never met Schwarzkopf in person and don't know how big the guy is...

@Michael: Yeah well, that neck is odd and I considered changing it, but the area around the neck is sculpted very well and I did not want to change the neck and end up with badly re-sculpted surroundings. And like I said, this one has been lying around for too long already. By the way, the error is only seen from the side, and I positioned the figure such that it is less evident.

@Mark: I hope to have an update around next weekend! Thanks for now.

@Taesung: Thanks. Unfortunately I don't know who sculpted this one. I do know however that some of the earlier Verlinden sculpts were damn good. These all have the same style with excellent folds. This figure looks similar with respect to style.

    @Grant: Thanks man.

@Tony: Thanks. Cool name, chocolate chip camo, I hadn't heard that one before!

@Mario: Thanks. Do you know if Julian Hullis (hadn't heard of him yet) is still sculpting? I had been wondering for a long time who did the sculpting of these early excellent Verlinden figures, so I'd like to know the 'author' as well. Verlinden is a hero of my younger years, although I figured that he couldn't possibly do all that sculpting by himself....!

Adrian, I'm not sure about Julian Hullis... I did several Verlinden Desert Storm figures and heard Julian was the sculptor of most Verlinden's 120mm offerings from that line. I know for certain he did the Stinger Gunner but I'm not completely sure about Stormin' Norman, although it does look like one of his sculpts.

Looking forward to seeing your chocolate chip camo painting.

    Stormin' Norman - WIP 2

Here's a small update. Progressing slowly....

Pics 1&2: The dark patches added.

Pic 3: The lighter patches added and highlighted.

Pic 4: I tried to copy Schwarzkopf's uniform, but I found getting it right harder than I thought....

Pic 5: To be used for the white spots

    Pic 6: Dark patches - 2 parts 871 to 1 part 982, with a tiny bit of 921 added.

    Pic 7: Light patches - 871:982:981:986:921 - 4:2:4:1:1. Highlight by increasing the 921 and 986.

Pic 8: The colour mix for base colour 7 parts 986 to 12 parts 821 (I guess 1:2 is easier and should also work) - Highlighting by adding 986 and later off-white, shading with adding dark brown 822.

Pic 9: My workplace with reference stuff found via Google.

I hope to have some more in about a week!

    Cheers,
    Adriaan

That's spot-on! I can't wait to see your next step on the six-color desert camo.
  16. Ferris A Fixture

Hey Carl, yup try to keep the bench tidy and the dust out.

Hi Hiroshi, thanks man. It really is a six-colour scheme, but particularly the two light colours are so close, that it is a challenge to capture them. Right now I am only doing 5 colours, but I'm very eager to get the sixth in as well.

    Thanks for your comments gents!
