Ciao a tutti,

I've finished this little gem, a JMD bust of a Sikh soldier during WW1.

I used this bust to experiment few techniques and new colour schemes.

I hope you like it, let me know what you think.

Ciao

Giovanni

I think he is masterfully painted Giovanni!
It's hard to comment on such fine work, but for my personal taste he is slightly too high on the contrast however. It's a rather dark figure and the beard stands out a bit too much, in the pictures at least. Maybe it's the dark background. I wonder how an ocre background would work?

Anyway, just a matter of personal preference and/or the dark pictures, because you obviously master paint and brushes perfectly!

Nicely done Giovanni, but too much contrast for me.

I'm not a fan of high-contrast paintwork on busts generally, and the random placement of some of the darks and lights looks odd to me, however given the slightly cartoony nature of the sculpting a stylised painting style is maybe more appropriate than something more straightforward.

Always a pleasure seeing your work Giovanni.(y)
This JMD bust is kind a odd for me...
I like very much the way you painted the clothes and leathers, unlike the skin tones and color of the beard THAT remind me a cartoon figure.

Cheers

Very nice. Some great shading and lovely tones. The leather looks exceptional.

Thanks so much Gellso!

Hi Adrian,

Thanks for your comments, I did contrast the painting on purpose, as the sculpture is kind of a caricature, but I found it fascinating.

As for the beard, I did study many pictures of Sikh and if they have a white beard it really stands out a lot.

But again I think this is not a matter of right or wrong, but of taste and fun!

Thank you again.

Hi Einion,

Thanks for commenting.

I think you got the point, this bust is more of a caricature/cartoonish style and I did my best to highlight the sculpture.

I've seen many version (including the box art) and I found that they didn't give enough spark to the sculpture.

I think that a more straigthforward approach would have make this bust dull..

But again, this is my personal opinion and moreover I paint it because has been a great learning curve and incredibly fun!

Thank you again.

Amazing leather-tones!

Cheers
Thank you Martin!

Has been the easiest part of the figure, took me 30 minutes and I used 4 colours straight out of the tubes!

Hi Pedro,

I understand and appreciate your comments, as I said above, this is an experiment, and great fun.

Next figure will be less extreme, just because is a more regular sculpture.

That is a beautiful little piece, the skin tones are terrific and the turban and uniform also well painted,I don't have an interest in this regiment but the bust is very nice and very eye catching,he really has some character about him.

If your intention was to create the 'boys own comic' look then you have achieved your goal. I think the style fits this bust and it looks superb.

Hi Ken,

That was the point and I'm happy you think I achieved it!

Excellent paint my friend!!

Hi Brian,

Thanks so much for your comments and compliments.

I'm not a fan of this uniform as well, but I really like the sculpture, and I think has been an hidden gem, haven't seen too many of these around.

Have a try, is so much fun.
