Horse hooves come in 2 colors. A dark grey almost black and a light tan or blonde color. The hair on the crown is the key as to which color to use. If it has white socks or a crown then it gets the blonde/tan color. If it is dark hair then its the dark grey color.

Hoof coloring or leg coloring is classified as:
Crown - just above the hoof in a thin line
Half postern - sort of a short sock that covers the entire pastern almost to the cannon
Mid Cannon- covers the pastern and up the cannon
Sock - which is about halfway up the cannon half way to the hock.
Stocking - runs up to the hock
