Hi everyone

Hope your all safe

I have this from Mitches ...my thoughts are to add the beret as in the cover on the book ....

I know he has Battledress on that pic and the actual sculpt is based on a statue but what do you folks think

Here's a painted version I found on www

Appreciate your thoughts on the beret addition

Happy benchtime

I like the idea of adding the beret Kev for no better reason that it is so iconic and distinctive a colour that it makes one want to know more about the character and look a bit closer. (y) (It would also make him stand out a bit against all the other khaki dressed chaps. I'm sure you can make the pale beret color really pop)
Cheers
Paul

ps - really enjoying seeing all this great work being produced at the moment

I know they are different people the bust is actually Lt Jock Lewes but nothing to say he didn't wear the beret ...or maybe the maroon beret with SAS badge

....I feel more research coming on ! ...

He's obviously got a shirt on but wondering what he's wearing over it ...

The straps are from a haversack and parachute ...I think !...

Very happy to be advised on this

Agree it's great seeing everything being shown ...really shows how we all enjoy this hobby ...no matter what we model

Stay safe mate

according to Brian L Davis in his book, "British Army Uniforms & Insignia of World War 2", the beige beret was never officially sanctioned for wear and does not appear in any War Department recommendations. It appears to have been an unofficial adopted item, predominantly worn by original members of the SAS. The white beret was worn by members of L Detachment, SAS, but there is speculation that they were beige ones bleached white by washing in petrol, etc and the effects of the sun. All "white" berets were replaced with beige ones...(y)

On the painted version of the bust, those straps definitely look like parachute harness Kev, & they’re certainly thick enough for that. As for what he’s wearing over the shirt & tie, it looks like some sort of overall or possibly the early version of the jump smock worn by British airborne troops which was a copy of the reed-green Fallschirmjager “bone sack”.......
Just a thought.

Osprey Elite 1 “The Paras” has some colour plates of the early jump smock, which was a direct copy of the Fallschirmjager smock including the step-in legs. The one you’ve illustrated above is the oversmock, worn on top of the web equipment but under the parachute harness.
I think the early jump smock was worn by the Paras taking part in the Bruneval raid, which John Frost led.

It looks as though the clothing worn by the bust has buttons up the front, so it’s probably a coverall. But I’m sure your putty sculpting skills could alter it to a zip-fronted smock if needs be.....

Cheers Chris , I was looking at that Osprey plate last night noticing the long sleeved worn ...not sure about putty skills !

I was considering adding the early jump helmet as in that plate ....thoughts ?

Bust could be wearing one of these, like Chris alluded to....(y)View attachment 377919

Many thanks for picture Steve

The jump helmet is very distinctive and probably straightforward for a man of your calibre to make, but looks a bit 'odd' (Just a personal opinion) whereas the buff beret is instantly recognisable and saves having to do the hand as well (I know all those fingers can be scary)

Just put a basic shape of the jump helmet ...interesting but does look odd so ...........

Going to need to hold my nerve on this ....take away some of the hair to get beret fit right ..off to look at WW2 beret pictures they look quite large on the drop

Fingers ....gone all shivery ...lol

:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::happy:

I'm sure it will be fine Nap.
Go on you know you want to.

I would go with an ordinary overall. Most (all?) jump smocks had a zip, to avoid parachute wires snagging, and most (all?) Jackets would have chest pockets. I'm also thinking overalls, because he's wearing a shirt and tie. More like a day in the shed, maintaining or training, rather than getting ready to jump.
Then again, with the SAS and LRDG's predilection to wearing whatever they could get their hands on, including German issue and local clothing, your guess is as good as any. :)
