Fabulous set piece and it looks a lot like it is based upon an Angus McBride print..? Irrespective, a must have once available.

Yes, the idea of a pose was taken from the famous picture of Angus McBride.
But the gladiators were made differently.

I saw a TV show on the gladiators. According to the research it presented, these guys would have been more like the figures here, a bit heavy and "well padded" rather than the body builder look we are accustomed to. The fatty layer would have less blood so an injury would be less likely to be fatal.
