I remember a lot of those BMSS entries turning some of the 'Old Guard' apopleptic  One I recall by Geoff Cornish, I think,.....a quite rare Britains guardsman painted entirely gloss dark brown with the title " The Chocolate Soldier ". Thought we were going to have to call an ambulance.........

This is one I entered in the Robert Tichband Trophy for Artillary. It's a Chinese Rocket Launcher with 2 Airfix figs. It did get a mention in Mil. Mod. that year, but the Old farts weren't keen. Ray scan0266 (3).jpg

Can't see why, Ray, it's perfectly valid as a piece of artillery equipment. Some of the OF's were a mite stuffy , to say the least, but Don Fosten and Bob Marrion were always keen for us younger chaps to stir things up a bit! That was back in the 70's.

Now there's a pair of super illustrators.......most will readily remember Don Fosten's stuff, But Bob Marion's
work was terrific as well - anyone remember his 'Scots Greys' from the early Historex supplement ?

Mike

Yes, Mike, still have it, plus some of the old Historex catalogues, which I bound into hard covers while still working for E II R in National Archives.

Our biggest beef with the O.Fs was the Raffle. Having travelled down from Manchester, They would hold the Raffle results at 4.00pm and the Competition Results after. With over 40 classes to anounce, which sometimes didn't start till 5.oopm we had to leave before all the results were anounced to catch our train back. We told them often enough, but, they couldn't care less. And, without a car, how could you get to Warwick University on a Sunday for the Inter- Branch.??We once caused a panic by sugggesting the wining Branch hosting the following year's Show!! Ray

Bless all the OF's .......all characters

Perhaps we should rename the thread ..." Memories from the past"

Speaking of Phoenix, if you use Facebook, visit our MFCA group, and look for Walt Damon's thread for a project he's working on, with Phoenix figures and one of the Victorian cab kits. I'm sorry, I don't have a link to it right now.

Prost!

In my collection I’ve got 2 examples of Phoenix’s 80mm Lance-Corporal, Corps of Military Police, NW Europe 1944 which I think was released about 1977. One of the figures was painted for me by the great Steve Warrilow when we were both serving in Northern Ireland 1981-83, & the other was given to me by Housecarl.

Steve Warrilow’s version is still beautifully painted in oils & Humbrol, but its base is a bit battered after being shipped overseas & back again. Still an outstanding figure after all these years though, & a nice crisp casting. I keep promising myself that I’ll strip the one Carl was kind enough to give me back to bare metal, & repaint it......I might make it my first post-retirement project in a couple of years’ time. Thanks for giving me one of my favourite Phoenix castings, Carl.

Getting back to Pheonix Figs, I did an article On Joe Saw in Campaigns Magazine issue 40 which featured a few Pheonix Figs. I don't have the hardware to copy them, but feel free to look if you can find a website that covers it. Ray

Well, someone really likes his Phoenix figures! I just saw an eBay auction for a 1986 Phoenix catalog go for $24.50.
I do admit, I was in the bidding when it started at $3. Old catalogs are great references when trying to identify figures.

Prost!
