Question about Napoleonic Infantry Uniforms

I'm looking for a bit of help on a French foot dragoon. The references I have say he'd be wearing the same gaiters and footwear as the regular infantry. However I don't see any info on what the gaiters would be made out of. I've look around online and see a lot of sources that say wool, but I also see some that say leather. Can anyone tell me which is correct? I'm especially interested in getting the finish to look right, so if it is leather I'd also like to know whether it'd be shiny or dull.

As for color I see I've got a choice between white or black. I'd like to go with black. So while I have your attention I'd also like to confirm that the buttons up the side of the gaiters would have a silver finish, correct?

    Thank you for your help!

There may be someone who can give you a more definitive answer, but I'm under the impression they were made from a canvas type material,

    Hope this helps!

When dragoon regiments where dismounted to augment the infantry strength, they wore the normal dragoon uniform with the sword bellt over the right shoulder, and an infantry pack and with rolled cloak on top.
The gaiters where the usual issue black starched cotton canvas over the knee, fastened on the outside of the leg with small buttons and a buckles sstrap below the knee.
The buttons could be of white metal or just black, the knee buckle was of white metal or sometimes brass.

Thanks for the references, peedee! As you saw I already wrapped up the Dragoon, but those plates will be a huge help on many future projects.

    Hi

There would also be a leather strap at the bottom of the gaiter under the shoe. It wouldn't be easily visible but it was there.

    Cheers

Yes hugh and the funny thing is how many modellers remove them as flasn on their castings!

It'ks all obvious only when you know isn't it.

Haven't we all done something like this at some time? I'm building Pegaso's Teutonic knight at the moment (I have a bad habit of building several things simultaneously) and almost filled a hole on the horse which is meant for attaching the bottom of the knight's cloak !!
