Picked up this awesome figure at WASMEx a couple of weeks ago, and have been quietly sanding, filing, gap filling and glueing it together.

I plan to prime and then lay in the major colours using an airbrush, and then tackle the smaller details and the effects with a brush. The vallejo paint bottle provides some indication of the size of this piece.

Have to say its a beautifully engineered and cast kit with hardly any seams and no pits or bubbles.

Cracking figure mate, are you going to use brushes or a roller??? Seen the original one painted up at Euro by Diego Ruina at the Pegaso stand, stunning.

Yup, any bigger and you will need a paint crew! Nonetheless, this looks to be an fine piece and without a doubt you will thoroughly enjoy painting him up. I look forward to seeing how he comes along. (y)

Pegaso released it at Euro last year Steve, this year it is a Templar also in 200mm-can't wait for them to do a Napoleonic!

I saw you part with about a months salary at WASMEx, but I didn't see this one in your stash.
Impressive figure mate, looking forward to seeing him painted up.

Thanks for all your encouragement guys. I primed the figure last night and now I'm waiting 24 hours before I start the long process of laying in the base colouirs and getting the figure prepped for airbrushing.

    Hi guys,

I'm experiencing my annual post-WASMEx slump in motivation. I just haven't been able to get myself into the hobby room to paint this magnificent 200mm Roman Praetorian from Pegaso.

Last night I broke my drought and started work on the flesh tones with Jo Sonja acrylics. I've gone for a mid purple shade of base coat, made from a mix of flesh colour, prussian blue and crimson. The highlight colours include flesh colour with a bit of Naples Yellow and Crimson, and Titanium White added for the upper highlights. As always there's a degree of experimentation involved in this, so I'm not sure if I'd use these colours again, but so far it seems to be working.

I'd be interested to get some feedback on whether the purple base colour is too purple or if it looks OK.

    Tony,

I will follow your progress with great interest. I have one of these on the way and I am planning to do it as a winter project and centerpiece for my collection of Romans. It is too early to tell in the photos how your base tones will work as the color is still very light but I do enjoy experimentation.

Hi Tony, I think that if you put your usual Oils over the top, this will blend everything in and dilute the purple look, probably giving him a more deeper, weathered look. Could be interesting

The purple seems ok to me Tony, but the photos exposure has been affected by the large surface area of white undercoat so I'm sure it's not really showing us how it looks to you.
Go with it and see how it goes........can I suggest with future pics it may help to avoid showing so much white as it will washout the colours of your painted areas...cheers.
