    Hey again folks,

This is what's on my bench at the minute. I picked him up from Darren (Tommys War) on his home turf at Hinckley and he went straight on the bench as soon as I got home. Early days yet but I like how he's coming along so far. I'm having a bit of trouble pinning down the uniform colour at the minute so that's why he looks a bit multicoloured in the pics. It's defo too brown for now so I'll need to make it lean a bit more towards green, maybe with a glaze or 2 tomorrow.

Also shown is the work holder I picked up from Michael (Bespoke Bases) who was sharing a stand with Darren. I love it already and that little smiley face just makes me feel all warm and fluffy when I'm painting ;)

Pics are taken on iPad so apologies if they appear the wrong way up (as they inevitably will):

Nice one Billy - really must try a couple of Tommys War figs (Coming from Coventry I spent a fair bit of time in and around Hinkley)
    How did the show go?

The show was great Paul. Lots of clubs and traders, and lots of amazing models to stare at in wonder. My only gripe was the lighting in the competition hall, it was very, erm, orange. As a result I couldn't really get decent photos of the amazing entries. The next show will be in a new venue so hopefully that won't be an issue next year.

Yes, the trench section is also from Tommys War and I have to say that the casting is superb. The texture on the wooden parts has to be seen to be believed. It took quite a bit of filling and sanding (OK, a LOT of filling and sanding) but I eventually managed to blend it into a spare wooden base that I had kicking about in my shed. I'm actually quite chuffed with how it turned out to be honest.

If you click or tap the thumbnails they should be the right way up when they open :)

Im having one of those frustrating moments when you mix a colour which looks perfect on the palette and when compared to reference photos. Then you put it on the model and it miraculously turns into a totally different colour :(

On the palette (the olive drab shade in the middle of the second row):

And on the model (it looks a lot more yellow now) :(

I'll check it out again after he's had a couple of hours in the hot box. It might just need another glaze (fingers crossed)

    Onwards and upwards :)

While Sgt Atkins is cooking I cracked on with the base which is now pretty much mapped out colour-wise and just needs the details picked out.

The base doesn't like the hot box by the way. After leaving it in overnight I noticed that some of the joints were more visible as if it was delaminating and a couple of strange glossy stains appeared which looked like something was leaking from the solid resin (it's a miracle, call the Sunday Sport). The problem probably lies with the glue and paint I suspect. Anyhoo, lesson learnt, the base will be staying out in the cold from now on and I'll respray it at some point.

I wasn't particularly planning on using a limited palette for this one but that's how it's turned out. The piece lends itself very well to using a limited range of colours so if you're thinking of trying out a limited palette then this would be a good practice piece. The colours I've used, apart from the Alclad primers are:

    Yellow Ochre
    Blue Black
    Alizarin Crimson
    Burnt Umber
    Titanium White

    All W&N Artists oils.

Thanks Huw, I'm glad you like him. I'll be swapping out the Yellow Ochre for Gold Ochre for the rest of the painting. I picked up a tube today. It is essentially the synthetic equivalent of natural YO and I already like the way it handles so much better, the YO I was using felt quite lumpy and gritty, especially when mixing with a knife on a ceramic tile.

Cheers Paul, presentation is key (Meghan Trainor even wrote a song about it called "All About That Base").

Have a great time at Stoke matey (y)

    A bit more progress :)

The basic uniform colour is getting there now (I'm loving that Gold Ochre, it's now officially my new favourite paint of the day). He's now cooking off in the hot box for a few hours, if I get a chance later then I'll make a start on highlighting and shading.

I also slapped a couple of varnish coats onto the wooden part of the base and, through the wonders of modern chemistry, have transformed it into a lovely piece of walnut (don't ask me what it was before, it might even be walnut for all I know. If it was, it's now a lovely piece of shiny walnut). Once that's dry enough to take some masking tape then I can respray the rest of the base.

Thanks again for tuning in (y)

Cheers guys for your kind words (y)

Smiley face aside, the work holder is a really good design Joe and I would wholeheartedly recommend it. It just sits very nicely in the hand and will also sit solidly on the bench without fear of it toppling over as it has a nice wide flat bottom. I bought 2 of them at Hinckley and if I spot Michael at another show I'll probably snap up another couple.
