Straight a co-production for a new roman warrior! And me that I thought that the thematic one had been abandoned on the Romans and initiate the interesting seam of the native Americans.
Dear Administrator Tommi, would want to know if is me permitted to intervene in this thread, because in an Italian forum I have been banned to have effected interventions (with attached visual and literary documentation) non pleasant to administrators about some subjects of the firms in matter.
I would not want that this happens here also, but for what I have understood frequenting this site His management guarantees an exceptional liberty of expression (obviously in the limits of the education) to all the affiliate.

I have a question about the Roman cavalry figure. Would it be a good representation of Equites Singulares Augusti?

Endured a thanks to Staff for… the hospitality on this Forum, I repeat, of very high level.
As they have made the colleagues Spike and Ubbi (that thank lively) in the thread “Berserker”, also I would want to put on hand of who I wish my acquaintances to them on the roman world.
My contribution will not be for who wants to realize the subjects tout-court like proposals from the firms, but for that they wish to obtain a reliable and historically truthful subject modifying the models in commerce.
This because the greater part of the ancient subjects often “is personalized” from who produces them for having a greater visual impact on who acquires them, to loss of the truthfulness of the subject.
It is obvious that many little figures are masterpieces of sculpture and painting but about uniforms, dress and armour, they have obvious errors (modifications) brings in order to obtain more spectacular subjects to you just (like the panoplies of the film “the Gladiator”, more scenographic but fanciful!).
I only hope that, with difference of the other forum, when I write something on this or that subject of whichever firm, it does not accused to pontificate or to denigrate the other people's job, destroying it; this is happened when I made present that, attached visual and literary sources, various subjects had been proposals with obvious errors in uniform, dress and armour or modifications (interpretations) of fantasy.
Precise that the reasonings from me introduced, even if object of cruel attacks, never have not been demolished from a few; I have these articles, and I will be very happy from send on-line (or private) to who me you make some demanded.
I conclude that I shall speak only and always of ancient preroman and roman age, and never of medieval, Napoleonic or today arguments because I have little knowledges.
In attended of having some elements in more from firms (monarchic, republican or imperial age? Light or heavy unit, geographic identification of the unit, sources for the work) - the title “Decurio Equitum” is very poor! - I send back my participation soon.
A big greeting to my friend Fabio/Odysseus

Probably the staff of the two companies it does not have time to answer, but we try to begin the speech.
Like often pointed out, the more important phase in the realization of figures is the search, phase that I carry out therefore: initially I think and study the subject to carry out, I look for primary sources (reliefs, statues, mosaics, archaeological reports, ancient writings, etc.) and alone after I have clear ideas about the figure I want achieve I start my work!
I don’t know the primary source of this subject (maybe an ancient roman coin of an Italian numismatic or a tombstone?) but the figure it is sure resumption from two designs of Mattesini (pages 200 and 212 of “the helmets of the roman legions” Editor Archeos). From the photo introduced from Tommi (rather small) the helmet is not looked at well that, in the design of page 200, there is an little central eagle on the top replaced with the crest of horsehair resumed from page 212 (this is one of those “personalization” of which I spoke, the miscellanea of elements; if a subject, primary source or reconstruction, is introduced in a way, I do not see because to invent something that not is! (it is explanatory the helmet of the “Candidatus” of one of the two companies extrapolated from one figure of the Sarcofago Ludovisi: the cheekguards they have been carved to flakes when they are simple you hang us of leather: (“personalization” with big work of sculpture but big error!)
On purpose of helmets, the explanation of page 200 say that the figure wears helmet conventionally so-called type Heddernheim “H”, but one studious a lot considered on an Italian forum says that helmets of this typology they do not exist! Anyone has new documentations is very accepts.
We return to the design of the Mattesini; the helmet of the subject of page 212 are supplied of a mask make them hinged the top, but they figure not extension this accessory: helmets with protections make were used them is in combat that in “Hyppika Gymnasia”, ability performance in which the knights exhibited themselves.
If Tommi - or who for he - could supply some other photo we could understand if said helmets he is bringed again to a very precise typology or is, like I suppose, one miscellanea of elements taken (crest) and not taken (mask) here and here.
The subject, a decurio of cavalry (as the Mattesini of “Wing Petriana” writes - I repeat, I do not know from where comes its reconstruction), wears one sash (zone militaris) to the waist; it seems but that said accessory (derived from the hellenistic panoplies) was worn from legacies, tribunes, etc, (Ara of Domitius Aenobarbus) like identification sign of high rank, and therefore not reasonable if wears by a decurio of Wing maybe auxiliary corps.
The shield, not visible in photo, sure will be copied from page 212, like the bracelet.
The leggings could come from the reports of Straubing (Germany) but also in this case the photo does not help.
This with regard to the reconstruction of the subject; with regard to the realization, from the photo and I repeat from the little photo, seems that the horse is small and stocky, with somewhat strange the posterior limbs; the right foot of the knight who perhaps looks at in photo (and also the left) - without support of stirrups - does not have to remain therefore rigid but to hang more.

I think does be not ill-bred and excused me for possible errors of translation and my bad English!!!
    “Tal” Robert
