Patch Identification

Discussion in '"Today in History", Literature & Media Review' started by Larry Esposito, Mar 22, 2016.

  1. Recently a member posted an air force patch...it was in a WW1 flying aces thread. I immediately recognized it as being similar to one found in my mother belongings. I never had a chance to ask he whose it was or how she came about it in her possession.

I know RAAF must be Royal Air Force, but would anyone have any additional info, like era, etc?

    Thanks! DSC_9873.JPG

Not an expert in the RAF but image shows RAAF which I would say was the Royal Australian Air Force.

  5. Hmm...plot thickens. Australia? My maternal grandfather had ties to Ireland/Scotland/Whales. Was there a time where the Australian air force was stationed in Europe?

RAAF would have been stationed in the Uk during WW2. Also members of the RAAF would have been attached to RAF at any of their bases You can also say that they could also be attached to units of the RCAF.

    RAAF also served in Burma.

  8. Great info. Thanks guys.

I think I may make a diorama/homage, sometime in the future, built with this patch attached to the base or something like that.
Any subject matter related to the RAAF and WW2? Famous ace or something like that?

Try a Google image search for "World war two Australian Air Force Uniforms". This generates many images, but not all of them are Australians. You'll have to check each one and save the right photos.

When you've got a number of good images, may I suggest that you save copies in the Uniform Reference at the bottom of the Forums page. World War two has already been set up as a topic, but not Australia. You could ask any of the moderators to do that for you.

    All the best,
    Dan

My next door neighbour Frank who died a couple of years ago, flew Spitfires in Britain but flew more hours fighting the Japanese in a Mosquito over New Guinea and surrounding islands.

    Hi Larry,
A bit late, but searching throws up a lot interesting stuff on the RAAF. If your looking for an R.A.A.F. ace then Clive Robertson "Killer" Caldwell DSO, DFC & Bar
    cheers
