Started painting Lannes now that Colbert is history. I have dropped the idea of glazes over grisaille as my experiment on glazing Colbert's face was almost a disaster. Plus I was happy with the richness of colour I got with oils over a white undercoat (i.e.no coloured acrylic under layer). Will be doing Lannes in oils too.

I laid in the off-white orbs to Lannes' eyes a week ago with unbleached titanium oil paint so it was pretty dry this morning. Here are some pictures of work painting his eyes this morning. I also rebalanced his philtrum with MS as it was squint.

Next stop, the first flesh tones on his face and hand.

I think you've totally cracked it, Colin. Your sculpts and painting are showing progressively more realism and humanity.

First flesh oils. Phil Kessling's old recipe - Mars orange + a little cad red + a little cad yellow, lightened with titanium white. Deep shadows are brown madder alizarin.I find this effective in all scales from 28mm to 1/6.

I added some violet under the eyes and at the sides of the nose. Sepia in the darkest part of the eye socket near the nose. This is just the base flesh. more to come.

Thanks Huw. Note that I edited the mix. I had listed ivory white to lighten but it should have been titanium white. The face photographs a little darker than it appears to the eye in natural light
