Hi Guys
I've been painting figures/busts for over 30 years and i've always used W&N series 7,or Raphael 8404 brushes, and although i reckon these are the best, the cost is just getting crazy. Can anyone recommend a cheaper brush ,either natural hair or synthetic.I'm not painting as much as i used to,so long lasting is not an issue.A brush that will hold it's point for 1 or 2 figures would do fine.

I use Rosemary & Co but I save the kolynski sable brushes for the more controlled and detailed painting. I go for the cheaper sable and synthetic for the donkey work.

BrokenToad are a good alternative too.

I also try not to use pointed round brushes for everything too. Sometimes a flat or filbert is better suited.

Hi Brian, There is a shop called The Range, they have paint brushes in their crafts section. The ones I use are Royal and Langnickel. You get a pack of 10 for £7.99,4 flat and 6 ordinary. They are a torquoise colour and are good for general painting. The small ones are good for painting eyes on a bust and if you give them a good clean they should last a while.I only have 1 good series 7 and it only gets used occasionally.Cheers, W.

Not tried their brushes but The Range is a useful place for picking up various hobby-related nick-nacks.

Brian, I got these as 'jobbing' brushes to use before moving on to finish with better quality brushes.
Remarkably they have held their points even after some brutal use, also doing well for blending and some detail work.
As with any cheap range you can be lucky sometimes.

Well done Del .... you just cost me fifty-eight quid LOL!

Thought I'd take a punt on those brushes at that price, and ended up buying a few paints and other bits to take advantage of their free UK postage on orders over 50 quid offer.

Useful share now bookmarked, cheers.

I'm in the same boat as you in regards to W&N series 7 and 8404's but rosemary and co are my go to for base coating and basing brushes.

I'm very impressed with my brushes from Broken Toad. I've used the MkIII Kosinski ones for just about all my painting (save drybrushing and weathering..:woot:), and they are still in superb shape. I also second d the shout for the Range, they stock several series of Windsor and Newton, apart from the No.7 series, and I use the Artist and Professional ranges a lot as my heavy duty brushes. They lack the finesse of the Kolinsky hair, but last a long time. And I can be quite hard on my brushes..
