There are alot of Medieval or ancient figure's to start with.
54 mm is great to start with, and there are so many figures in that scale that life is to short for painting them all.
75 mm is great. But the larger the figure, the more detail you must paint.
I suggest that you start looking at Pegaso or Andrea site for the right figure.

And there are more producers then i mention here. Go look in the revieuw section and i'm sure you gonna find more.
Let us know what you find, and gonna paint for more advises.

Thanks again Marc. I should point out that I'm in Australia and there are not a lot of figures readily available. I'll get in touch with Ian at Empire Hobbies and work something out. I understand when you say there are a lot of figures out there. I'll get back once I've decided on a figure.

OK, I had a look at what's available and I've narrowed it down to:
Alexander the Great - Pegaso 75mm
    French Knight 1350 - Andrea 54mm
    Hannibal - Andrea 54mm
    Macedonian Leader - Icon 54mm
    Roman Praetorian - Seil 54mm
    Viking Warrior - Seil 54mm
I should point out I'm not afraid of fine detail. I used to take very great care with my 15mm wargames figures. What's new to me is highlights and shadows; layering and blending. That's what I need to master (and have fun in the process).

The Viking Warrior is a great figure to paint, also is the French Knight.
Look after them, make your choice and enjoy painting, that' s the important thing, enjoying yourself.

I must admit I'm partial to the French Knight but I'm a bit of an Alexander nut so the 75mm Alexander and the Macedonian Leader tickle my fancy too.
I suppose it doesn't matter what I start with because I hope to get around to the all eventually.
    Cheers
    Brian
