    "Atomic Annie"...


    October 23, 1953 is a great day for the 7th US Army stationed in Germany!

    In Mainz, a brand new nuclear cannon is presented to the press and public, with which the American forces in West Germany are now equipped - here is a press photo...:

    The next contemporary press photo shows the howitzer being transported to the presentation...:

    This nuclear-capable gun of the type "M 65" was first tested on May 25, 1953 in the USA...:

    The soldiers call the 28 cm caliber gun "Atomic Annie" - it has a range of 29 kilometers.

    "Atomic Annie" is a further development of the railway gun "K5" of the former Hitler Wehrmacht...:

    20 copies of the weapon will be built; 16 of them alone are stationed with the 7th US Army in West Germany...:

    Here's an "Atomic Annie" at a practice shooting session at the Grafenwoehr Training Area in the late 1950s...:

    The nuclear ammunition is stored in heavily guarded special bunkers in Mainz, Nuremberg, Bamberg and Grafenwoehr.

    The artillery units of the US 7th Army that will be equipped with the new weapon are...:

    But just two years later, the howitzer will no longer fit into the tactical concept of the US Army because of its low mobility!

    Since 1955, this has provided for small, mobile units that are to operate independently with tactical nuclear weapons for some time even after a nuclear attack by the enemy.

    In 1963, therefore, the 16 “Atomic Annies” were withdrawn from the Federal Republic.

    The live fire of May 25, 1953 at the Knothole test site in the USA remains the only nuclear ammunition shot ever fired from a cannon of this type...:

    More recently in 1990 Gerald Bull, who had designed and proposed launching satellites via “super guns” was assassinated- probably by Mossad for essentially going rogue and working with Assad to develop guns for Syria …
