    The Terror comes to Mecca...!

On the morning of November 20, 1979, New Year's Day in 1400 according to the Islamic calendar, a group of up to 500 people stormed heavily armed radical Islamists from several Arab countries ...

The leader of the group is Juhaimān al-ʿUtaibī ...

    ... a fundamentalist preacher.

The insurgent "fundamentalists" led by him declare that the end of the world is imminent and that the Mahdi has come in the form of Muhammad ibn Abdullah al-Qahtani - a Saudi preacher and Salafist.

They called on the radio to adopt Islamic legal systems in all Muslim countries, to overthrow the Saudi royal family and to break diplomatic relations with Western countries and demanded that no more oil be delivered to the USA.

Leader Juhaimān al-ʿUtaibī firmly believes that his action will spark a worldwide uprising by Muslims against their allegedly un-Islamic governments and against the domination of the West - at least that is how he indioctrinated his followers before the action.

The attack on the Great Mosque is primarily intended to hit the prestige of the Saudi royal family as the guardian of the holy places of Islam.

The Saudi King Khalid ibn Abd al-Aziz ...

... has the national borders closed (to prevent further supporters of the hostage-takers from infiltrating into the country) and on the afternoon of November 20, 1979, the mosque is surrounded by the police and the military and the power supply is cut off.

The security forces cannot intervene for the time being!

On the one hand, the many hostages forbid it, on the other hand, Islamic law in Saudi Arabia forbids any use of force in holy places.

So the Saudis first have to get a Muslim arbitration - a so-called "fatwa" - from religious scholars, which approves armed action in the holiest place of the Muslims.

They also get this "fatwa" from the Saudi "ulema", an association of the highest theologians of the kingdom.

During the time (several days!) That the "ulema" need to formulate their "fatwa", the majority of the hostages are released through negotiations.

Then there is a storm - but what is planned as a raid-like coup d'état by the security forces develops into a two-week real battle in the ancient and winding building ...:

The occupiers even entrench themselves in the "Kaaba" - an outrageous act even among Muslims!

The last of the insurgents can only be overwhelmed after the Saudis have flown in French special forces from the local anti-terrorist unit "GIGN" to help them storm the huge basement area.

After two weeks the battle is over ..:

According to official Saudi figures, the fighting is said to have claimed 330 lives.

Independent sources assume that well over 1,000 fatalities - hostage-takers and hostages. How many of the security forces lost their lives in the action is a state secret to this day!

63 insurgents, including their chief al-ʿUtaibī, who is captured alive ...

During the fighting, a bomb exploded on the floor of the largest Islamic sanctuary, the "Kaaba" ...

... torn open. Among them, several pre-Islamic idols come to light, which the Saudi authorities have eliminated as quickly as possible - because what cannot be what cannot be!

Nothing is known about their whereabouts - state secret.

The Islamic world is of course extremely upset about the occupation of the Great Mosque in Mecca and the fighting there.

Their anger is not directed against the Islamic hostage-takers, but ...

The Iranian revolutionary leader Ayatollah Khomeini expressed the assumption in a radio message that US-Americans were responsible for the occupation, whereupon an angry mob burned down the US-American embassy in Islamabad (Pakistan) - the Pakistani military could take the embassy staff to safety at the last moment with helicopters bring ...:

There are other anti-American protests in the Philippines, Turkey, Bangladesh, other cities in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Libya, where the US ambassador is lynched ...:

Hardly a word is said in the countries mentioned about the fact that so-called "Muslims" murdered hundreds of their fellow believers in the holiest place of Islam ...

Among experts, November 20, 1979 is now considered the day on which Islamic terror came into the world ...
