    A New Tsar!

On November 1, 1894 (according to our era), the Russian Tsar Aleksandr III, who was apparently completely healthy and in the prime of his life, died completely unexpectedly in the palace of Livadia in the Crimea.

In reality the outwardly so vigorous tsar was seriously ill: During a bomb attack by the underground organization "Narodnaja Wolja" ("People's Will") on his private train on October 29, 1888, he had a ruptured spleen that was not recognized and treated by his doctors and probably also sustained further internal injuries when he saved the life of his family with his almost overwhelming powers ...:

It is clear that his eldest son Nikolaj Aleksandrovich, the Tsarevich (= heir to the throne) ...

... from the moment of his father's death the new tsar is!

He will not be officially crowned until later.

But there is one problem: A Russian tsar MUST be married - and Nikolaj is not yet! He is only engaged - to Princess Alix of Hessen-Darmstadt ...:

So they have to get married on the same day!

But: there is still a problem - the Zaritsa MUST be Russian Orthodox - and Alix is a devout Catholic!

    Now they have to hurry!

First Alix converts to the Russian Orthodox faith in a much shortened ceremony (which nevertheless takes several hours!) And is baptized by the patriarch in the name of Alexandra Feodorovna ...:

Then they get married - fortunately this ceremony is not quite as pompous as usual at weddings in the Tsarist's house - after all, one is in the official mourning period for the deceased Tsar and during this time no celebrations are allowed (which is why Nikolaj is not celebrated until later, in May 1896 , crowned ...).

However, the wedding is by no means "simple" in our sense, as the painting Laurits Tuxen shows ...:

Now that everything is in order (Russia cannot be without a ruler for a single day!), Shortly before midnight, Nikolaj Aleksandowitsch becomes the "emperor and autocrat (" Samoderschez ") of all of Russia, Moscow, Kiev, Vladimir and Novgorod, Tsar of Kazan , Tsar of Astrakhan, Tsar of Poland, Tsar of Siberia, Tsar of Tauride Chersonesus, Tsar of Georgia and Grand Duke of Finland " proclaims and takes the name" Nikolaj II. " at.

When the church bells ring midnight and the new day begins, Nicholaj II. is tsar ...!
    Ferris and valiant like this.
