Nice figure: him striding along and the dog make it.

I suppose you could paint him up to represent Joseph Bara (in habit and stripey trousers rather than hussar outfit, a la Moreau-Vothier's painting: one could even add fringed epaulettes).

Is there a ref for this?

I could find these (two are Job). The fig would paint up as any of these.

I understand that French drummers were usually men but that, during the Revolution in particular, boys often 'joined up', partly as mascots.

Color related pictures

Looks like the second one is the nearest ref (not Job either), most others are by Fregier (inc my 3rd one). The latter are interesting in that they show decorated drums: typical of the early years before the plain brass ones became standard.
