    Total Loss!

    At the end of April 1968, the US nuclear fighter submarine USS "Scorpion" (SSN-589) left the port of the NATO base in Rota, Spain, and set course for the waters off the north-west coast of Africa...:



    "Scorpion" has a classic espionage assignment!

    In the waters in question, 500 kilometers off the African coast, there is a small unit of the USSR Red Banner crew, apparently conducting hydroacoustic experiments:

    The Soviets let their ships equipped with a lot of electronics (the Americans tell the unusual number of antennas on their ships!) large balloons.

    That these are military incidents is made clear by the fact that the Soviet formation, which consists of two survey ships and a submarine rescue ship, is accompanied and secured by a nuclear submarine of Project 659 (NATO code "Echo" class). .:


    The Americans would love to know exactly what balloons are all about!

    So far, the USA has monitored the association from the air, but has not found anything relevant. This surveillance will now be suspended between May 19th and 21st.

    This in turn means: USS "Scorpion" is on site!

    On the evening of May 21, USN Commander Francis Slattery reports...


    ...in a short encrypted radio message to his base in Norfolk that they had secretly taken some photos of the mysterious balloons - but nothing else came out. In addition, the commander reports that he is 50 nautical miles south of the Azores on the assigned route home.

    Then "Scorpion" strictly adheres to the commanded radio silence again.

    The submarine is expected back in Norfolk on May 27th - but it doesn't come. Nor the next day or the day after that.

    In the following week, the US Navy starts a secret search for the "Scorpion" - but assumes from the start that the almost 80 meter long submarine with its 99-strong crew is a total loss!

    On the route of the "Scorpion" the Atlantic is on average 3,000 meters deep, which is well beyond the depth of the submarine's destruction of about 600 meters.

    Only on October 29, five months after the loss of the boat, did a remote-controlled underwater camera from the search ship ""Mizar"" actually capture ...


    ...pictures of the wreck at a depth of 3,380 meters...:

    ...on the seabed allow unequivocal identification...:

    The "Scorpion" was torn into two parts by the explosion in the forward torpedo room, which independently made two furrows in the seabed.

    The front part includes the torpedo room and the control center, the rear consists of the remains of the engine room and the reactor department. The tower has been demolished and lies by the two parts in a field of small rubble.

    Photos of the explosion site (bow section torpedo room) are a state secret of the USA!

    Part II

    The "Scorpion" sank on May 22, 1968 about 400 miles (740 km) southwest of the Azores! The explosion and sinking with the hull imploding due to the water pressure was recorded to the second by sonar buoys, with which the US Navy "bugs" the entire bottom of the Atlantic...:


    And immediately before the accident, the "Scorpion" was not heading west (direction Norfolk) but to the east, ie back to Africa...!


    The exact position is kept secret to this day!

    A second thorough exploration took place in 1985 when the deep submersible "Alvin"...


    ... of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) dived to the wreck on behalf of the Navy and took the first color photos of the Scorpion...:


    This was done in great secrecy; for camouflage it was reported that the mission was to find the "Titanic"!

    It wasn't until former Navy officer Dr. Robert Duane Ballard...


    ...had carried out this secret assignment, he was actually allowed - with "Alvin" - to set out on his successful search for the "Titanic"!


    Only after a newspaper report did the Navy admit that the mission had led to the "Scorpion" and published some of the pictures, but again none of the exploded bow section!



    The next two pictures show the enormous water pressure down there: The steel rudder blades of the "Scorpion" are literally squeezed together...:



    Only when the hitherto secret results of the Ballard investigations were released by the Clinton administration in 1993 did the circumstances of the sinking of the USS "Scorpion" come to light:

    The boat had 14 so-called "Mark 37" torpedoes on board, which the Navy considered highly problematic!




    These guns were notorious for being prone to so-called "hot runs":

    A torpedo activates in the torpedo tube and the screw begins to turn. The only way to disable the torpedo again is for the submarine to perform a 180 degree turn on an opposite course, after which the torpedo will automatically disable itself to avoid attacking its own ship.

    This would also explain why the "Scorpion" headed east before the explosion.

    In a number of cases, the battery of the electric motor in the "Mark 37" torpedoes then exploded due to overheating, since the outer shell of the weapon was not cooled in the water but was still stuck in the torpedo tube.

    As always in such cases, there were (and are!) plenty of conspiracy theories surrounding the loss of the submarine - and aggressive Soviet ships, helicopters or submarines play a major role in almost all of them.

    They have all proved untenable! Even the Trump administration, which would certainly like nothing better than to pin something on the Clintons, hasn't found anything of the sort - otherwise you could already read it on "Twitter"...

    Ultimately, the "Scorpion" fell victim on May 22, 1968 to the same cause of the accident as the Russian "Kursk" (K-141, 118 dead) on August 12, 2000: the explosion of one of its own torpedoes on board - with the subsequent detonation of all torpedoes in the relevant bow section...
