    The First Tram In The Russian Empire…


    After long having to be content with horse-drawn trams…

    ...and had more or less unsuccessfully experimented with steam-powered wagons...

    ... on May 21, 1892, the first electrically operated tram in the Russian Empire goes into operation.

    It is line 1 at Kiew (today: Kyiv, Capital of free Ukraine)!

    The route is about a kilometer long...

    ... and the ticket (then called "Abonnement") costs 5 kopeks....:

    In Kyiv, of course, there is a monument commemorating this event...:

    A few years later (1899) the electrical marvel also established itself in Moscow...:

    In the capital Saint Petersburg there has been a provisional line since 1894 that only runs in winter!

    It's route will be - including catenary! - rebuilt over the frozen Neva every winter - and dismantled again when the ice is no longer stable...:

    A regular tram service with electric trains on fixed lines starts in Saint Petersburg much later - in September 1907 - here are pictures of the inaugural trip...:

    In the Asian part of Russia it will take until October 9, 1912 before the first electric train runs in Vladivostok...:
