    Eighteen Marshals...

On the 29th Floréal of the year XII. (the revolutionary calendar has not yet been abolished!), which corresponds to our May 19, 1804 and thus one day after the proclamation of the Empire Francaise, the newly crowned Emperor Napoleon I reintroduced the rank of "Maréchal de France", which had been abolished by the revolutionary national convention in 1793 , only now he is called "Maréchal d'Empire"!

At the same time, 18 division generals will be promoted to marshals!

Sign of their new dignity is the dark blue marshal's uniform bristling with gold...

...the hat with white feather trim (unlike generals who wore black feathers!)...

...the marshal's baton trimmed with blue velvet and solid gold imperial eagles...

...and the epaulettes made of heavy gold thread with crossed batons...:

Incidentally, all the pieces shown here come from the personal possessions of Maréchal Davout...
