    Hi fellow modellers ,
We all like the unusual models and it was my pleasure to receive the latest release in the WW1 range of busts from UP Miniaturen this time its the femme fatale Margaretha Geertruida Zelle , better known as Mati Hari .

Before we move onto the figure lets have a bit of background history to this interesting and unusual subject .

Mata Hari was the stage name adopted by Margaretha Geertruida "Grietje" Zelle MacLeod October 1917, Vincennes), a Dutchexotic dancer, courtesan, and accused spy . She was born on 7 August 1876 in Leeuwarden in Holland .
She answereed a newspaper advert placed by Dutch Colonial Army officer Rudolf John MacLeod and they moved to Java , the marriage was a failure despite producing 2 children , and she left him for another officer during which time she joined a local dance company and learnt all the moves !!, at the same time she adopted the famous name which is Indonesian for "sun" or "eye of the day".

She went back to her husband and in 1903 began working as an exotic dancer in Paris but the marriage finally resulted in a 1906 divorce , Promiscuous, flirtatious, and openly flaunting her body, she captivated her audiences and was an overnight success from the debut of her act at the Musee Guimet on 13 March 1905 The most celebrated segment of her act was her progressive shedding of clothing until she wore just a jeweled bra and some ornaments upon her arms and head. She was seldom seen without a bra as she was self-conscious about being small-breasted. Pictures taken during her performances suggest she may have worn a body-stocking for her shows, as navel and other bits of the female anatomy are not seen even in poses where they should be visible

In WW1 when interviewed by British intelligence officers, she admitted to working as an agent for French military intelligence, although the latter would not confirm her story. It is unclear if she lied on this occasion, believing the story made her sound more intriguing, or if French authorities were using her in such a way, but would not acknowledge her due to the embarrassment and international backlash it could cause.January 1917, the German military in Madrid transmitted radio messages to Berlin describing the helpful activities of a German spy, code-named H-21. French intelligence agents intercepted the messages and, from the information they contained, identified H-21 as Mata Hari. Unusually, the messages were in a code that German intelligence knew had already beenworked out by the French, so perhaps the messages were contrived.
On 13 February 1917, Mata Hari was arrested in her room at the Hotel Plaza Athenee in Paris. She was put on trial, accused of spying for Germany and consequently causing the deaths of at least 50,000 soldiers.

She was found guilty and was executed by firing squad on 15 October 1917, at the age of 41, a description of her execution states that she refused a blindfold and wore the best clothes available to her in prison.

As the shots rang out and Mata Hari fell. she did not die as actors and moving picture stars would have us believe that people die when they are shot. She did not throw up her hands nor did she plunge straight forward or straight back. Instead she seemed to collapse. Slowly, inertly, she settled to her knees, her head up always, and without the slightest change of expression on her face. For the fraction of a second it seemed she tottered there, on her knees, gazing directly at those who had taken her life. Then she fell backward, bending at the waist, with her legs doubled up beneath her. She lay prone, motionless, with her face turned towards the sky ...she had paid the price some say wrongly.

The fact that almost immediately after her death questions rose about the justification of her execution, on top of rumours about the way she acted during her execution, set the story. The idea of an exotic dancer working as a lethal double agent, using her powers of seduction to extract military secrets from her many lovers fired the popular imagination, set the legend and made Mata Hari an enduring archetype of the femme fatale.

For your delight and reference pf course heres some pictures of the lady herself (I have been "selective"!!!!;))

Moving onto the actual model itself :

    Scale : 1:10th

    Material : Resin

    Reference Number : 0017

    Sculptor; Ulrich Puchala

Casting: Yanis Sagiadinos of YS masterpieces

As usual from UP , it was received very quickly and well packed , coming complete with an information sheet signed by the sculptor , the model (a limited edition) consisting of 4 pieces , the torso a head , right arm holding clothing and a Iron Cross base .

I have spoken to Ulrich who is considering a different base for the "girls" within the range but as this is a WW1 subject the base is suitable , if you would prefer not to use the one supplied then its easy enough to find a replacement of your choice.

Lets now enjoy the subject matter , looking first at the torso ...

Ulrich has chosen a dancing pose with Mati leaning slightly back , this allows some wonderfully subtle sculpting on her stomach and naval/belly button area.

However although the body is very well done the bejewelled dance uniform she is wearing , all the necklaces and hanging pieces of this exotic "work" clothing are of particular note and well defined ..all just waiting for the modeller to bring to life , she also has arm bracelets .

Over this she wears more material over her left shoulder , which also has some really nice details sculpted , the challenge here is to make this see through by using washes and gradually building them up resulting in a great effect perhaps using a violet colour .....at least that is what I have planned !!!!!(y). The folds of this is done very naturally ready to receive the other piece of the clothing .

Lets look at the other piece of clothing ...

This has been sculpted in full flow wth some great movement , within the clothing is the right arm covered in bracelets , fingers holding the corner of the material delicately , details on the hand is very well done , down to her wearing some more costume jewelled rings (well a girl just can't have enough :))

There is a very fine casting line to remove from the lower arm (little bit of wet and dry and thats done easily) , the fit to the torso is very good with only a minimal swipe of filler required .

Now to the next and final piece of the model the face ..............

In one word EXECELLENT , Ulrich has captured the features of Mati spot on , such a delicate effect for such a deadly female , even unpainted she looks at you suggesting a "liason" ...wonderful , the hair is nicely defined (this should be painted black) particularly the way it has been done on the forehead .

Again she is wearing part of her dance outfit in the form of large jewelled earrings and what is literally her crowning glory a headdress which sweeps round the hair and looks like she is wearing it rather than just sat there ..WELL DONE that sculptor I say (y) .

Finally lets have a look at the full piece , on the dry run all pieces fitted together with no major problems apart from a little prep and Mati will make another fine addition both to your display cabinet and to the range that UP produce .

    Conclusion:

This is a subject I have always wanted to see produced and Ulrich has done the both UP Miniaturen and the subject a great credit . I would have liked a different base but it does give the modeller the option to produce a unique base for what is a unique figure .

I can't wait to paint this one , the delicate fleshwork , the bejewelled costume , the materials in full flow , the black hair contrasting to all of these ...great .

Another one I can recommend to all .

Mati can be obtained for 35 euro's plus shipping

    Great sculpt,

different subject ( a glam subject based on reality, not airbrushed or silicon enhanced models)

plus the challenge of translucent fabrics, the soft tones of female flesh, the jewels with associated precious metal work......

    sigh.....;)

    Outstanding!

This kit should prove very popular with the painters. Even a non-painter like myself can see lots of challenges!

    Hello
After a long while to reflect your post. I will answer you not only in the sculpt.
I dont like the slavery a la mode specially in our view to females.
As sculptor I try to do the constitution and character near by without modern stereotypes.
This kind of girl has a movement on the back. And the "fatness" is necceassairy on female body, because they have more about, than muscle, naturally.
All the various type of taste is normaly out of discurs.
WE can talk about diffrent guy
bodies during the centuries to attend many facts about food, sports and so on.
Why is soft skin more difficult in the times of airbrush ?
    vive la differance
    Best regards

    hello
has nothing to do with slavery.i refered to the beauty ideal nothing more.and surely this mistress had not an body to dye for.ven in her times i think.if one looks at the pics one sees an woman wich is in normal body proportions but really no godess.and i think this is not sexistic nor brutal to say.
rubens painted nude women too.but evn women living today would surely not say this proportions are the thing one is keen on.
iam an child of this time.and so i follow in taste the modern time.
when i say its hard to paint i go for an normal talent.artists of course have no problems with it.
so you should not think i want bather you.you are not her father nor did you make her.you just sculpted her and this shows fine in your bust.
neverless iam was never interested in the charcater of this woman and so would not be interested painting it.
i add that iam also not interested in painting erotic figures.so iam not an pervert:eek::D i only dared to give an commetar in regards to her figure.
no problem iam looking like shit myself but can freely admitt this,:pi have the grace of an true bratwurst myself.
so please do not mind my commentar.i am not so sensible in such matters.

    Marcus ,

I am a little confused as to your comments , I did the review based on the sculpt and nearly 3 hours of research to give the very best to the members ..a fair and accurate review .

Whilst it might not be your choice it is a subject which others are interested in , you are of course entitled to your thoughts and you are right the female form does change with the times and the period concerned has been captured by Ulrich ...hence my reviw comments .

    Roger ,
Going to paint the Nursey first (a UP female mannekin was used as a base) then its Mati ...should be interesting revisiting the references especially for the clothing .

    hello mati
your preview is excellent as is the bust.i was not after rousing anger here.it was only that i thought always from the stories one hears that Mata Hari would have been such an impressive beauty an real goddess which never walked earth before.so in the kind of Greta Garbo playing here in an movie.and so i was surprised by the real photos.i never had seen pics of here and so i was surprised that in my oppinion this is not the case.i know how over years the beauty ideals are chanching.
so the sculptur has catched here very profoundly as your review does the kit more than justice.
i pointed only out that i would not try it first because its not my main interest and more because its for my humble posibilties simply impossible to paint.because its so hard with this silky robes and the rest.and of course one writes from his point of view.i think the bust will be popular, simply because its an different thing.
please be not upset.i was not aware that my small commet might arise such concerns at yours as at Mr.Puchala the sculpture.
i think its not as important if she was pretty or not-AGAIN MY OPPINION- its more interesting if the sculpting did catch here-as is here the case.
    get my humble apologizies both.

Thats a neat bust, this and Princess Vicky is my favourites.

And Markus, if a women has to rely on her body to be sexy, then she probably aint sexy. Its so much more. Also remember these where times when most people didnt know very much about naked bodies and the variety. Bellydancers should have some tummy and some bodyfat, just doesnt work with skinny girls. Also in these days there where different tastes for different guys.

    Cheers

Interestng subject. Great sculpt. Well written review. Looks like a real challenge to paint.

FWIW, there are stll men in this world that like women with a bit of meat on their bones and sexy is more about attitude and confidence.
