Maiwand was a now-forgotten disaster , eighteen months after Isandlwana , and with a rather similar scenario. A small army under General Burrows blunders into the main Afghan Army ; firepower holds them back for a bit , but an over-extended position is then overrun .
About half the troops became casualties, the others escaping to take shelter in Kandahar .
