As rapid-fire weapons, the US Army and Marine Corps used the British Vickers HMG, the French Hotchkiss HMG, the French Chauchat LMG, the British Lewis automatic rifle and the US Browning automatic rifle.

The US Army tried the Colt HMG M1895 and M1917 versions but both had serious mechanical problems. The Russian Army purchased and put into field service Colt HMGs.

Some of the Vickers type HMGs used by the US were manufactured under contract by Browning.
