At the beginning of the war, Belgium utilized working dogs, mostly Mastiffs, to pull the 60 lb Maxim Heavy Machine Gun and its ordnance loaded on small carts. Large dogs were commonly used as pack animals in Belgium, so this was not unusual.
After trench warfare began, there was no longer a need to use the dogs and carts to haul machine guns. They continued to be used to move supplies forward into the trenches, however, until the end of the war.
