From the German Landsknecht, "Land", the land, and "Knecht", the valet, the servant. The explanation of the word by the translation "valet d'Etat", "man who serves the state", is erroneous: the lansquenets served in independent companies and did not serve only one sovereign. It is more probably a word formed on "Land" in the sense of "flat land", as opposed to the mountain, place of origin of the Swiss pikemen, other famous mercenaries of the XVIth century. The Landsknecht is therefore the valet [of the master who employs him to fight] coming from elsewhere than the Swiss mountains - the lansquenets were indeed recruited from all over the Empire.
