Dear Planeteers,

Today started my latest project JMDs Scottish infantryman - who i have decided to paint as a Gordon Highlander.

The Kit as always with JMD is well sculpted and cast although smaller in size than its other 54mm great war figures, the figures sculptur has captured a real sense of movement with the jock charging hard in the attack !
as always a card reference is included which details tartans and bonnet badges for regiments - Note that this is only in french and i beleive that the black watch tartan shown (a red kind) is usually only worn by pipers........ as it is not the standard dark blue government pattern.also some regiments (including the gordons wore dark green with red cross hatched patterned hose tops as opposed the white/pink and red illustrated on the ref card (although i am no expert and am happy to be corrected)
I discarded the small piece of ground work and made my own from greenstuff twigs and verlinden photo etched barbed wire.

I have to confess that i have had a hard time of it today with this one, the dicing on the glengyle seemed to defeat me after munerous attempts, after completing base coating i have given it a rest untill the clumsies go away !! is it just me who has bad days?.............................

Also i think my camera may need replacing as i am struggling to get good shots today - can anyone reccomend a spec of digital camera ? and also which back ground colour is best ?

Anyway this is a great figure from JMD - will pick it up again next weekend!!

Thanks gents , i must admit i am having a wobble with this one though, hence putting it down today, never painted a highlander before or much true 54mm, it is significantly smaller than the JMD tommy that i put in the painting forum, any way practice makes perfect i guess i am still not happy with the hose tops glengarry dicing etc, hopefully its just going thru the old transitional scruffy period, will keep posting with progress next week even if i do b*gger this one up ! - the groundwork was the easy bit although i have discovered that miniature barbed wire is every bit as viscious as the real thing !!!

Kirky, it's a shame you didn't get decent pictures. But from what I can see you're getting better with the painting. You're right about the tartans and when painting these regiments a study in what was worn on campaign is certainly necessary. If I remember this right the socks were the standard khaki-green during this period. The white and red only used on parade. But these orders changed a lot so always check on this before painting (even I could be wrong). You could check with the regimental museum (most of them have a website)

I forgot to mention that years ago at a show I saw a 54mm WWII highlander entitled "Ladies from Hell" in virtually the same pose so ever since I have want to just this figure, I'm glad to hear it's up to JMD's usual standards.

I think the one which can do close-up photography needs a camera.
The various cameras are various, how to copy is done.
However when using the software which can deal with a picture, I think every digital camera is same.

Kirky you beat me to it! I am just putting the finishing touches on my version, which arrived Friday. I'm glad you posted as I can see I need to pay attention to the ground work on mine. Did you make the barbed wire or is there some ready made product on the market? Nice job on an excellent figure.

I ordered some verlinden productions 1/35th scale photo etched barbed wire, works well, carefull tho its viscous, do you have a method for hose tops and glengarry dicing by any chance ? looking forward to seeing some pictures of yours, if you cant get vp barbed wire in canada pm me and i will post you some, by the way i know alberta or the prairie anyway, from many summers at BATUS - WHAT A PLACE TO TRAIN

From what i can see in these picture's is that you have done a great job on a awesome sculpted and cast figure.
