Absolutely amazing, Roy! The figure is jaw dropping and the SBS wonderfully informative. It truly inspires the sculpter inside each of us. Thanks so much!

I hope you do get to cast this figure - I'll wait in line for it, too! :)

Please keep posting pics - I think we're all waiting with baited breath!

Nancy
Hi Nancy..I'm glad you found the info useful.....I'll work on him some more and keep you up to date with some more pics

Eddy & Stephen...those are very kind remarks...glad you like it...many thanks.

Frank..Euro just wouldn't be the same without our ol' mates...looking forward to catching up with you too..it's gonna be great...

All the best.

Roy.

Well they have said it all before me as I'm always late in posting...........but sharing the same birth date, maybe will get me somewhere :(

It is DEFINITELY an inspirational piece............your sculpting is REALLY AMAZING, and you had me "jaw dropping" literally

I am also "waiting with baited breath"

Ray ;)

Hi Ray...you're a fine painter...and if my figure appeals to you then that is a great compliment on it's own...thank you...what do you do with people born on the 13th....??..buy them some more cool figures.. if we ever meet up Ray....we must share a birthday drink.. :)

Hi John..thanks for you positive words too..they are very much appreciated.

All the best...and thanks for looking.

Roy.

You're on for that birthday drink mate

I know you as I've been to Euro in '96, '99 & 2003.......in '99 I was with your group who went for that chinese (meal) down that road in Folkstone........we were a big table remember?

However, I won't be at Euro this year as much as I like to be......... Ingolstadt and Boston have drained my meagre bank account this year

P.S. I have saved your in-progress pics in a 'special' folder ;)

Ray.

Hi Roy

(don't you just hate typing in a long message, submitting and losing it)

Great looking sculpt, mate. Very clean. great subject too - reminds me of the Toshiro Mifune character from The Seven Samurai (one I want to do myself as a character study)

Hope to catch you in the Clifton Bar again at Folkstone  . Remember you hadn't really been on pF than, but now it seems like your second home!

More please!!

Rob :)

Ray...'99..that seems ages ago...it was..!..but you couldn't forget the chinese (or the indian) in Folkestone...
It's a shame you can't make Euro...(there's always next year) :)

Rob thanks for the encouraging comments...and yes..I'll be at the Clifton this year too....look forward to catching up with you in the bar.

And the seven samurai...when I saw it last year, I just loved the way Mifune pesters that samurai on the road...the way he was strutting around in his scruffy old clothes with the big ol' sword on his shoulder (he sure would make a fine study..you really should have a go Rob.)...there's a lot of inspirational characters in Kurasawa's films...

all the best...Roy.

AWESOME piece of sculpting,Roy,and a FANTASTIC SBS to boot (y) (y) (y) !!! Looking forward to the next step in the project, mate. Cheers !
Kenneth.

Roy... wow! All I can say is you make it look easy. Very impressive. I'm really enjoying following this one.

Francesca

Roy - Somehow I missed this one when you initially posted it. Holy cow! What can I say that hasn't been said? Just remarkable sculpting and an interesting, unusual subject! And, as Francesca said, you make it look SO easy, but I doubt that it is. How long have you been sculpting?

Could you describe your planning process for this (or any) figure? I notice you 'sized' the figure using a rule and layout board. Do you always do that? Do you do preliminary sketches? Did you have illustrations you were working from? Basically how do you go from 'concept' to 'execution'?

All the best,
Dan

Kenneth..thanks for your kind comments...hope you enjoy the rest of the progress.
Francesca..glad you're following the sculpt...and thanks for your positive encouragement too.

Many thanks.

Roy.

Hi Dan..thanks so much for your comments...I'll try to answer some of your questions if I can.
I think as for making it look easy..well I can assure you that the method is not difficult, it involves lots of practice of course, but that holds true for most everything..and as you find yourself becoming more capable with each new figure you work on...and the set of procedures that one might go through on a regular basis becomes more familiar with every piece that you complete...it will eventually seem a little easier...but I do find every new piece to be a fresh challenge, but never easy...and it's the challenge I think, that keeps us coming back again to make another figure...it's like painting in that respect...you never stop learning as you strive to improve your technique... and I will regularly look at the work of others for guidance and inspiration..(there are so many beautiful examples on this very site)..and I think the more you are enjoying the process, the easier it becomes to let your technique flourish..and the task seems to become more of a pleasure.

How long have I been sculpting..?..literally since I was a kid..I was given plasticene for christmas one year....(I was easily satisfied)..and loved the feel of the stuff and I remember asking my dad what should I make?...his reply was "whatever you can imagine" so that was it..I never looked back.

For the planning....well, I always have a half dozen or so very simple wire mannequins of various sizes at the ready so to speak..they're only twisted wire and take minutes to make...I just use the ruler here to show the scale. He grows a couple of milimetres with the addition of footwear etc. I cannot draw or sketch very well at all..so although I would like to use drawings as notes I can't..so I compile any drawings, photo's or artwork of reference into a folder, along with precise notes as to what I have in mind, I try to be as specific as possible about all details, just in case I don't get to work on the figure as soon as I'd like to. I note down books, page numbers etc, all goes in the folder..as far as I'm concerned...that's my figure, ready to go. So while I'm sculpting I have all my reference to hand..that will include anatomy books detailed notes on weapons or equipment that I intend the figure to have...even pictures of hands in certain positions, which usually amounts to a set of photo's that I've taken...pictures of various hairstyles that I could use...you name it..it's all in the folder.

Sorry it's a bit of a read....but I hope it helps.

All the best.

Roy.

Hello Roy,

Even i missed it. What a great sculpting. I cannot sculpt, but i admire the men and boys who can sculpt.
The sculpters make the figure's that i like to paintl. Well, iff you cast this one i will stand third in line, because, Rob and Guy are before me.

Keep posting, i will follow this with great interest.
BTW, i hope to meet you at Folkstone.

Marc

Hi Marc...thanks for the very positive comments...I hope it will be a good one for the painter..we'll see how he turns out.
Really looking forward to meeting you at folkestone...and there are a few others to meet, now I met them on the planet..it gets better every year.

All the best.

Roy.

Very nice and clean sculpting !

Are you at Euro this year? Always nice to look at your sculpts.

How do you manage not getting all kinds of lint and dirt into the MS?

My MS seems to attract all sorts of airborne particles. Only thing I could do to reduce that is wearing a light grey T-Shirt when sculpting ;) ...

Hello Roy,

Late arrival as usual. ;)

I just dropped in and... WOW what a great s-b-s.

If I may make a suggestion, I think giving the fella a no-dachi AND a naginata would be somewhat an overkill. Instead, if you give him a walking stick instead of a naginata, it would emphasize further more the itinerant nature of these wandering characters.

In any case, he's turning out quite smoothly. Guess we'll see the final result at Euro. :)

Looking forward to the next steps.

Keep it up, (y)

Quang

Hello Roy,

I echo what the others said: Great sculptjob!!! I think you did a awesome work.

I´m looking forward to see your next step.

Best regards,
Markus
