    The first canned beer...!

On January 24, 1935 in Richmond, Virginia, the world's first canned beer hits the market!

At the beginning of the 1930s, many people in the United States were left "on dry land" because Prohibition was still in force.

George Newman, Technical Director at Krueger Brewing Company...

... but suspected that the lifting of the alcohol ban was approaching. Newman wanted to prepare for Day X, the day he would be allowed to flood America with Krueger Beer again. However, long-term storage in bottles or barrels was not feasible logistically and economically.

Newman had the saving idea: he filled his beer in metal cans shaped like small kegs...:

However, the taste initially left a lot to be desired because the beer reacted with the metal. It took chemists months to develop a tasteless inner coating for the cans.

Although Newman's cans weighed three times as much as today's and could only be pryed open with a special opener...

..., the breakthrough came straight away. Over 200 million cans were sold in the US in the first year.

The competition quickly followed - and the beer can is still part of everyday life in the USA...:

"Krueger Beer" in cans is still available today!

In fact, the competitor's technicians were even faster than Newmann and Krueger Brewery:

At the company "Schlitz" in Milwaukee, which was also founded by German immigrants, two years earlier - in 1933 - their own can had been developed - with the crown cork well-known from Coca-Cola bottles...

... and one could get the beer with a normal bottle opener...:

However, the first real beer can is the "Krueger" product.

In January 1936, the "Felinfoel Brewery" near (Llanelli, Carmarthenshire, Wales) at in the United Kingdom introduced its pale ale in the new cone-top design, making it the first beer in Europe available in cans - there they built the "bottle made of metal" from the US company "Schlitz"...:

"Real" cans were only available on the island after the war, since production there was interrupted from 1942 due to the war...:

In Germany, beer lovers had to wait quite a long time for beer in cans!

Experiments with beverage cans were also carried out in this country in the 1930s and 1940s, but the war put an end to the experiments - grenades took precedence over beer cans!

It was not until 1951 that the Henninger brewery in Frankfurt launched the first German beer in cans...

... and henceforth divided Germany's beer lovers into can fans and can despisers...
