    Africa's Last Colony...

On January 12th 1975 the last Spanish soldiers left their former colony "Sahara Occidental" ...:

After a - non-violent - uprising of the people living there (called "Sahrawis"), which went down in history as the "green march" ...

... and lengthy negotiations Madrid had decided to give the country independence - in order not to get involved in a protracted and bloody colonial war that could hardly be won.

In addition, the Spanish dictator Francisco Franco is dead and buried, who stuck to the colony until its end.

Franco had spent most of his active military service as a commander in the North African colony ...:

The former colony declared itself the new state "aṣ-Ṣaḥrāʾ al-Ġarbiyya" ("Sahara state"") with the town of El Aioun as its capital ...

But the joy of the approximately 550,000 Sahrawis over independence does not last long!

As soon as the Spaniards are gone, the Moroccans reach for the territory, which is rich in natural resources, and the military around the then King Hassan II. were ready to wage the dirty colonial war that the Spaniards did not want to wage!

The Moroccans carry out the land grab with a huge effort!

Since the invasion of 1976, the Maghreb state has occupied the Western Sahara step by step - and built a total of six different thousand-kilometer-long and partly fortified high sand walls across the desert to secure what it had conquered ...:

With every further step of conquest, the wall was moved several hundred kilometers forward - today the Sahraius rule only a good third of their own territory!

Moroco has grabbed most of the rest!

The sixth and, for the time being, last wall alone, secured with bunkered positions and wide minefields, is over 2,500 kilometers long!

The wall was specially opened for the "Paris-Dakar" rally, which was broadcast internationally on television in 2019 - such images or even critical comments were not made during the broadcast ...:

The dirty war of the Moroccans was kept secret from the world and its own people if possible!

Of course, the Sahrawis have fiercely fought against the land grab by the Moroccans over the years, but their armed fighters, the "Frente Polisario"

    ... is the Moroccans ...

... not up to the military level and can only puncture them!

But she does that too ...:

Officially there has been "peace" since 1991 and UN observers are stationed on the front line. On the right in the foreground you can see a tarred outpost of the "Polisario" - a UN vehicle is on the dune ...

But believe me: "Peace" has not ruled there a single day since 1976!

Especially not for the 180,000 Sahrawis who have driven the Moroccans out of "their" territory and who have been living in four huge refugee camps near the city of Tindouf (Algeria) for decades ...

And German (and other) corporations, under Moroccan patronage, also loot the country's natural resources - something the local media like to conceal ...

And since Europe needs the Markoccans as a "border wall" against the influx of refugees from the interior of Africa (and turns a blind eye to the policies of the new ally), the fate of Africa's last colony (such as Western Sahara is often and correctly mentioned) something changes for the better ...
