Not strictly a memorial but I thought this statue of St George in Zagreb was nicely done when I saw it last year.

    Absolutely not mat.

I am sincerely hoping to see statuary that can inspire sculpters/modellers/companies.
The most readily available form is in memorials, but it's all great stuff whatever it is, and we've had some remarkable submissions from around the world.

It woulkd be good to get some south american ones, but we'll see.

Can't beat a bit of bronze ! I love this, but my favourite so far was a few pages back the heroes monument in budapest.
I'd love to make all the figurs that are there for sure.

Thanks again, you found a cracker

I remember seeing this some years ago, a wonderful memorial. Thankfully, then,it was without the pathetic and disrespectful graffiti !:sour:

Yes , unfortunately there seems to be graffiti on everything in Brussels. Did consider not posting that image as I don't know what the graffiti says. Let me know if I should remove it.

Thanks Paul, I'm here with my family for the whole week.

Mercer's memorial was one of the first ones I came across when I visited and entirely by accident, bit of a coincidence as one of his officers was from Bedale. :wideyed:

Mat, it is particularly noteable that you chose not just to put the obvious memorials up here today,
These smaller monuments are little recorded normally but help greatly to show the scope of the field and range of the actual fighting.
    Thank you for sharing these.

I am jealous, are you doing Agincourt on the way home? Hehe

I completely agree Paul, while they're not very 'sculptural' the smaller ones helped us build a picture of the events that took place very well. I also thought it was ironic that it was easier to read the text on these than the big important looking ones!

Great post Mat, hope it was a rewarding trip in both senses, it serves as a great reminder that the poppy appeal as we call it today was originally known as the Haig Fund. And this was embossed on the poppy centre when I was a child.

You are racking up the miles mate this month.

You would have had to continue the same distance again beyond home to have seen this version.

I think we should do a sweepsatke on where you will pop up next,

my guess is Narvik or Telford !

Glad you like it Paul - wasn't sure how small they are allowed to get on this great thread of yours!
I like the picture - it's a dead ringer. They sure have some fine mounted statues in Edinburgh don't they.
You can start a book if you like (but put your money on Telford!)
    Cheers
