How to make scorched earth

I'm in the process of making my landscape for my "Death Dealer" vignette and would like to know how does one make my landscape look like scorched earth? I would also like to know if there is a step by step tutorials on the subject?

When I did mine I used Vallejo's NATO Black, b/c to me it's not black black, but has some green in it. Then afterward I misted some Vallejo German Black Brown over it all, lingering here and there to make the brown show up a little better. My weeds will get a coat of V's Smoke... HTH
